That Gnome rotary has always fascinated me! Engine speed control was not by a fuel throttle (it had none!) rather by a momentary ignition kill. Once it was started, the pilot would bump the kill switch to regulate the idle speed. Mustve been fun timing gattling guns to match the blades too!
One thats missing is an opposed piston model as in Fairbanks-Morse diesels. What a compendium! ws

The rotary engines were certainly a challenge to the pilot. They had a total loss oiling system & the lubricant of choice was CASTOR OIL. Flying with your mouth open would certainly keep you regular!

Another strange one that is in use today in the British 432 APC is the RR K60; 6 cylinders, 2 crank shafts, 2 sets of pistons (12 total) meeting in the middle to form the combustion chamber. These are a multi-fuel engine. This looks like the result of the Detroit Diesel designers taking LSD, but it actually works!

Quite an amazing similarity to the F-M OPs except those were all turbocharged instead of blown. Could be made direct reversable as well... Back in the late 40s my dad was a staff engineer at EMD (Electro-Motive) and was involved with GMs version of the OPs. He told me of a story once on a test run from Chicago to Rockford Il. where the operator used the compression release as a dynamic brake and rattled all the windows in town. Had several complaints later that day. Mustve been like a sonic boom but continuous! ws

If you subscribed to any of the diesel mags....there are several companies right now working with that design diesel fuel for more efficient,more economical alternatives.and the dang things make some serious power and weigh next to nothing
