Hi everyone,

Hi,

I have what I think is a Delco electric horn on my 1930 Model A Coupe, and unfortunately after sitting in a leaky garage for around 20 years, the electrical components on the inside are all rusted. Can it be cleaned up and fixed? Is it worth getting a rebuild kit for it, or should I just get a new horn? I'd like to spend as little as possible on it. I attached a picture of the inside with the dome removed.

I would replace it with a new A&L made horn that is sold by the major vendors. Keep this one to hopefully rebuild or just to get it to work.

Before you go crazy trying to restore that one please know that is not a Model A horn

Ford used five different horn manufacturers. Sparton, Stewart Warner, EA Labs, Ames (Heinze), and GIM but all were rotating motor type horns. The Delco Remy horns were used in a lot of GM products but it is a vibrator type horn with a different sound.

Interesting. I didn't realize it wasn't a Model A horn. I'm not going to make it into a show car or anything special. Just for cruising around town, but I guess I should look at getting a horn made for the Model A.

The Ahooga sound is one of the things that endeared the model A to so many people. There is even a web-site dedicated to it.

you will pay between 100-200. for a real model a horn, unless you get lucky at a flea.

I did find a battered one at Carlilse last yr for 30. but it is in rough shape, and matched the condition of one of my cars.

on CL you can find an older ahoogha horn in 12 volt configuration for about 50-75. they were made in the 1970s and sold by the likes of JC Whitney. Hutchinson is the name and they look pretty good.
