balancing 39 pickup 5 wide wheels and tire decision
I need to replace the tires for my 39 pickup and cannot find a shop able to balance a wheel with 10.25 bolt circle in Fort Wayne, In. Any suggestions please, Planing to buy 600-16 Coker tires, only open decision is whether or not to pop for radials at $250 each verse $167 for bias tires. of course each add 20 for tube and 25 shipping
Thanks Rob. |

Re: balancing 39 pickup 5 wide wheels and tire decision
You can get an adapter from Speedway or others that allows the wide five to be balanced. The Speedway adapters have 5/8" studs so you'll nee the lug nuts to match. Or you can try running the tires tubeless - which is what I do on my '39 p/u. If you go tubeless you can try balancing beads which is what the tire store which mounted my spare suggested but the LT radials I'm running aren't balanced and ride smooth.

Re: balancing 39 pickup 5 wide wheels and tire decision
I've got a speedway one. It's works, but the last time i was getting the wheel balance the tech told me that the adapter is okay, but the 5/8" studs allow for some play in the "wheel holes". The original ford lugnuts are tapered to secure the wheel to the hub. The speedway adapters (or at least the one I have, speedway might be offering a different version now) is really more for roundy-roundy cars and does not have the taper to fit the older wheels to the adapter.
Dick Spadaro had the correct adapter, since Dick has passed, I think someone has picked up the torch (over at the hamb) in making them. |

I use a extra front drum, I had to tap the race out for it to fit on the spindle on the balancer. Works great.

You may have to pull the hub and have the hub and wheel balanced together. Check with a big truck company. They may be able to spin balance the tire on the vehicle. That's what I did.

Re: balancing 39 pickup 5 wide wheels and tire decision
I avoided reading this because I have had no contact with wide fives. I see now the question of radials. Answer yourself these questions.
Is this a show truck? Driving only back or side roads Staying home in Inclement weather Even at Coker prices, Is my truck worth $332.oo? So if possible, I should influence you to experience, no regrets for running the best tire design available.
