I will second a stop in Auburn. Also, a stop at the Indianapolis Speedway and the museum there is worth doing. I know it's a little out of the way, but the Speedway Motors museum in Nebraska is worth a stop, as is an obscure place called "Heritage Village" east of Platte.

As long as you are nearby, the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown, PA has quite the collection. And hundreds of classic cars for sale.

For something different, if you like vintage motorcycles consider Wheels Through Time in Maggie Valley, NC.

Beacon Dragway has an event in mid-october that has been very successful. Ratoberfest is a car show/swap meet/Flag drag event. You'll see cars of every type, but few totally stock/original. Some r.. rods, but the major emphasis is nice street-worthy cars that are also strip worthy. 300 cars or so and a decent swap meet, which is oriented toward drag racing it seems, but some old stuff.

Beacon Dragway is in Paducah, Ky. far western Kentucky, not far off of I-24 on the way south to Nashville.
