Default 24 Stud Motor with Casting Number C 254 11 ??

Does anyone know what year/displacement this motor is? I bought it from a fellow that had it in a 1940 Ford and it is in good running condition. I had planned on using it in my 41 convertible as is so was not going to open it up unless I had to. It has 38 heads on it, but that doesn't mean anything. Thanks for any info.

.

Hey Chuck...Out of all the wonderful info that Mac VanP has compiled for the world on his great site, you're not likely to find the number " C 254 11 " hidden amongst any of it. Many similarly-styled numbers are lost as to their original meanings, but obviously played some part in the original casting and block-mold process. If you could even give us an idea of where that number is found on the block, it MAY (or may NOT) help determine whether that "C" MIGHT mean "Canadian" origin, or "Commercial" application, or just superfluous information.

Better clues would include number of head studs, distributor type, rear bellhousing configuration, oil fill/breather location, raised or flat intake manifold surface, numbers cast into the heads, fan configuration, and certainly a picture or three. DD

Two different engine were produced in 1938. It was the first year for the 24-stud heads and the last year for the 21-stud heads. Stampings have some known meanings but casting numbers not so much. If it has a big 59 on the back half bell then it narrows it to post war but that's about it. Engines of different years have different characteristics so a person has to go by that. After all these years, it could have about any flathead V8 save an 8BA type if it has a half bell on the back.

This was our best ID thread back when all the pictures were still there. Photobucket stuff got dropped but it still has a lot of information.
