Photo posting test

This is a photo posting testing for fordnut. Only problem I can see Kurt is the photo size. Both of these photos were in the 2 Mb range, when reduced to the 200 to 300 Kb range they posted with no problem.

I have found that the simple act of emailing pictures reduces them to a manageable size. It started when a member in Australia sent me some pictures that he couldn't post because they were too large. I was kind of puzzled when I was able to post them to "The Barn" with no problem. It then dawned on me that most mail packages are going to optimize the size of attachments for efficiencies sake. So now, instead of jumping through a bunch of hoops, I just email 'em to myself and the post them. This works, at least for my "gmail".

That is sure not the case with any photos emailed to me! They are always much to large to be posted and have to be reduced in size. Would be interesting to see what email program you are using where this occurs. In my case it is much easier to reduce the photo files size directly than it would be to email them, so not sure what the hoops are.

I agree and the email thing would be fine I've just never seen that work and I have had a lot of photos emailed to me from any number of email apps. It would be interesting to see how that is working for you and what is different. If you want to try it, email me a photo that is several Mb and I'll see how it comes through.

If people would post the hardware and software they are using with their photos hopefully someone would post the easiest way to resolve the size problem. When I email photos they are not reduced in size. I use a "Photos" software (from Apple) with a MAC computer.

There are several ways to reduce photo size in Windows, but no idea with MAC. Someone on the Barn should know, or do an online search.

OK I will take you up on the challenge. If you have a MAC and the "Photos" software that came installed on it reduce the size of photos by exporting them at a lower resolution. Open “PHOTOS”. Go to the command line and click “File” and then from the drop down menu click “Export”. The prompts will explain how to export the photos at full size or less than full size to someplace you select like the desktop. Anybody having problems with my explanation post the problem and I will walk you through it. I look forward to a similar explanation for Windows on a PC.

Just remember to set it back for the family and vacation photos or you will have a problem.

I use Microsoft Office Picture Manager. But you can use the Paint function to resize. You can also right click on the photo you want to resize and select "Open With". In the "Open With" window select "Photo Gallery". In "Photo Gallery" select "Edit" (it's to the far left) and then "Size". Then you need to select where you want the resized file to be saved, I use desktop. I'm sure there are other ways as well, but I use Picture Manager (and have for years) so really haven't explored all the ways to go about it.

i'm just seeing this. thanks for doing this for me. i'd sure like to know what changed and if it's on my end. I know that sometimes when a computer updates itself, things change and it's up to you to figure it out. not good. I don't even know where to look for a size changing button.

I open each picture in Paint (old school) and resize them to 800 to 900 pixels wide (narrower if a tall picture). Save em, rename em and post em. Then I have the original in a high res format, which is sometimes useful to zoom in to see a detail. I have also started hosting some pics on photobucket. That seem to be showing up ok in the posts I've made recently.

Most likely your camera is set to take pictures at a lower resolution than it is capable of.
And that setting just happens to fall within the parameters needed to successfully post in this forum.
Then again if the camera is old enough it may not be able to take pictures at a resolution great enough to exceed the limitations.

it's a sony HD video camera that can be used to take stills too. 32gb sd card that I put in the slot of my computer, then I pick the ones I want to import. the card hold A LOT of pics and vid. I wonder if a setting got changed in the camera. it does a lot of things that I never use.

Most likely there is a way to set the resolution of the still pictures you take in the camera, But if you are happy with what you see then I would not change anything.

Well, they are getting resized somewhere unless the original files were that small to begin with. Your posted photos are in the 30 to 90 Kb range. What was the size of the original photos? The size requirements are listed in the Manage Attachments window.

yeah, I've seen that page. I just don't know what to do with it. a lot of strange terms and numbers that don't mean anything if you don't know what you're shooting for. and I don't.

When you do attach pictures there, is a picture format and file size chart below it. Depends on format (extention bmp,jpg,png, etc), largest file size is 19.5 kb. 1mb file is 100kb, vs 19.5kb. Pixel size being important. Technology keeps wanting to exceed last year wether we need it or not.



I still remember when 8mb of ram was sooo much. ha ha. You could run the Apollo projects on the same computer power of a common cheap laptop now, but yet we can't get anything done. I blame the Kardashians.



On a mac use "preview" then resize to the chart available. No idea on microsoft.

I'm guessing you don't what to hear this, but I'll try anyway! If you right click on a photo with the mouse a window will pop up. At or near the bottom of that window is Properties. Left click on that and it will display the photos properties including the file type and size.

Note: if there are any kids around they can do this stuff in their sleep!!!

okay JSeery , I did what you said. H-2240 pixels, W-3984 pixels. that was on a picture that would fail to load.

Change it to at least 800 pxls.


Check the chart for jpgs. 800w x 600h or vice-vera. Bigestser number w/h is 800pxl. Should be good to go

The fuzzies may be because of too low of resolution. It's a balancing act.

If you arrived at the setting for your camera by going to the lowest resolution in one step you might want to try increasing it slightly and then testing to see if you can still post. If it works increase it another step. Remember there is a test forum to play with: https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=13 I always leave my camera at the highest resolution and then crop the photos to show only what I want to show or reduce their resolution. If you change your camera to a lower resolution be sure to set it back before taking family or vacation photos.
