Has anyone tried using E6000 adhesive in cracks to stop rainwater from coming in around the gas tank where the welting is? I have read where I should not use silicone because it will cause rust. All suggestions welcome.

I'd like to see justification for the claim that silicone causes rust. There are some weird theories out there.
That said, Sikaflex make a polyurethane sealant that is not silicone. I've used it with great results.

How about seam sealer ? Get it where they sell auto body painting supplies

Well, maybe the reason for the claim is that the silicone may keep the water in that spot causing rust. possible but quite unlikely

I just did a bunch of research on this as I am working on a project that I wanted to completely seal to prevent rust out.
Not all silicone rust metal. Acid based silicones will rust and corrode various metal parts. There are non acid based silicones out there that are safe. Any silicone that says sensor safe on it will have no acid.
The other option is to use polyurethane sealant.

No one in their right mind would use an acid curing silicone on metal - that's what natural cure silicone is for (sometimes known as "Neutral" cure.

The only thing silicon will reliably stick to is glass. Anything else, not so much.

BTW, ... rubbing or denatured alcohol will remove silicon in an instant because it's thin and gets under the edge and starts releasing, that's how well it sticks.

The welting is the gasket, if it is leaking replace it or use more clamps. I wouldn't use silicone on this but do use it in some applications..
