Gauge cork.
The cork float came off my gas gauge so I planned on replacing it with a new synthetic type. The float wire was to small of a diameter to fit the new float and I broke the float while trying to wire it in place. The old float is bobbing somewhere in the gas tank. I then used an old champagne cork rather than ordering a new, special "A" float. I just hope that she doesn't get too used to this, because I've been keeping her on a beer budget.

Re: Gauge cork.
the rubber floats work fine. The alcohol in the current gasoline disintegrates the cork floats. The one from the champagne bottle may work, as it is designed for alcohol. I had the same problem with my A and after replacing the float 3 times I went with the rubber one and no problems since.

Re: Gauge cork.
Did someone repair the arm at some point with larger wire? I don't recall any that the hole in the modern float was too small, in fact most fit a little on the loose side.
If the hole was too small, the modern float material is closed cell so the hole could have been enlarged. To install the modern material float you may need to cut a notch in the end so it fits around the long part of the arm, in most cases the floats are a tad too long. Before you put the float on, clean the end of the shaft it sits on very well, install the float then place a brass washer over the shaft and then solder to hold the washer on.

Re: Gauge cork.
Do tell us in a few years how that cork holds up. This could be groundbreaking. Are we talking Californian or French champagne?
"Do you have any Grey Poupon?" "Mais ouis, and my gauge cork is French as well!" |
