Model A Transmission
I have a guy that is going to go thru my engine, now I'm looking for someone to rebuild the transmission for me. Would even purchase one if I could already rebuilt. I live just north of Indianapolis In, but willing to drive a little. Thanks

Re: Model A Transmission
If I were spending your money, I would be tempted to get a Mitchel synchronized transmission.
If I'm spending mine, I'd rebuild it myself. |

Re: Model A Transmission
Try Van Pelt Sales. They are located in Milford, OH, so not all that far from you. They are the go to source for many early Ford parts. Their web site says they do transmissions from 1928 to 1962.

Re: Model A Transmission
Go to YouTube, There are video's of how a Model A transmission works, and video's of
how to disassemble, and rebuild them. If you have any mechanical ability at all, just follow the instructions and you can do it and have a feeling of accomplishment and gain a whole lot of confidence. John

Re: Model A Transmission
I don't know about a complete rebuild, but back i n the day (I was 15 or 16 at the time) I took a Model A transmission apart, replaced a couple of gears that were broken and re-assembled it. Worked great. Bought the gears from NAPA.

Re: Model A Transmission
Definitely entertain a Model A trans rebuild as a DIY project. Replacement parts are readily available and no special tools required to do the job. Do some homework, review a few Youtubes and you are good to go. Need to be aware of the continuing issue with replacement roller bearings and have a plan in advance. Much data on the topic on the forum. Good Luck.

Re: Model A Transmission
The A bone transmission is as simple as they get since there are no synchronizers in there. With the exception of some bearings, most parts are reproduced with decent quality. A person has to find the right people to supply new bearings since some of them are problematic.

Re: Model A Transmission
One needs a special tool for redoing the transmission tower.

You might start with Brattons or Arizona Model A for your parts...Ernie in Arizona

Re: Model A Transmission
Thanks everyone for your input, may go ahead and do it myself. Just want it done right so as not to have to pull it again, and as few leaks as possible. How do you know if the gears need to be replaced or not? Again thanks

Re: Model A Transmission
I rebuilt a Model a Trans out of the back of my truck during a lunch brake at work. I was in a parking lot down the road. Easier than legos. I did not do the shift tower at the same time. It really is that easy.

Re: Model A Transmission
I believe George Bell's video series goes into how the gears wear. Basically if the look good they probably are and if they look bad you can probably still use them if you don't drive much.
