Installation fo Shell Lacing Question
I want to install the Shell Lacing on the radiator shell on my 1931 Model A Slant Window 4 Door Town Sedan.
The radiator brace rods also connect on the radiator shell, in the same area as the Shell Lacing. My question is this. Do I bring the lacing up to the radiator brace supports, stop, and begin again on the other side? Or should I cut around the brace support and continue onto the other side? Thanks! |

Re: Installation fo Shell Lacing Question
There are 2 pieces used for shell lacing, one on the left side and one on the right side. I think you are referring to the front hood rod support bracket riveted to the radiator shell verses bracket for the radiator rods. The radiator support bracket is not on the radiator shell. I am not a 30/31 person, but to my knowledge, there are two pieces use on radiator shells used on 28/29 radiator shells.

Re: Installation fo Shell Lacing Question
The lacing is one piece, cut around the support.

Re: Installation fo Shell Lacing Question
Thank you guys for your help. I was able to get the right side of the shell lacing on the radiator shell today. I will get the left side done tomorrow or Saturday.
Thank you again. John |

Re: Installation fo Shell Lacing Question
Another lacing ?. When installing the lacing, does the wider bead on the lacing face the polished shell surface or inside towards the motor as in the ebeling photo? Have seen it both ways. Also, made the rivet tool from a nut tack welded to an extra ch. lock pliers as per attached photo.

Anyone ever asked a question & wished they hadn't & just done it the way you wanted to?
Will you miss the "BEST OF SHOW" Trophy, IF your hood lacing AIN'T up to PAR? Bill W.

Re: Installation fo Shell Lacing Question
it would be interesting to look at a NOS shell to see the factory method. I picture it would be faster if the piece of lacing was die-cut and placed whole, one worker on each side riviting as it comes down the line.

Re: Installation fo Shell Lacing Question
The lacing on my coupe is cut out around the radiator support and looks good to me. I will be doing my pickup the same way. P.S. both 1930 models

Re: Installation fo Shell Lacing Question
there is an engine compartment photo in the '97 Judging Standards that appears to show the lacing cut at the top of the shell as in Art's photo. I saw a photo of an original '31 SW sedan that confirms the lacing installed in 2 pieces at that time.
