Default Drill Bits

There two types of drill bit for steel. 135 degree and 118 degree. Most stores stock the 135. For mild steel which is best 118 or 135?

Thanks

Here is a link to useful information about drill bit geometry.
Possibly more information than you want.

I have always found Hanson High Speed Steel drill bits with the 118degree included angle to be excellent. Don't even think about carbon steel drill bits. Cobalt drills are also excellent. Just for the heck of it go to the MSC site and read up on what kind of drill bits are available, what they are used for and what they are made of.

Forget about Harbor Freight.

Often the geometry refers to drilling sheetmetal with the lower angle being preferred.

I've been buying good bits when I go to Hershey. I think it's "Drill Bit City" and they're located in the mid-west. The bits I've been buying cut like crazy and they have 3 small flats ground on the shank so they can't slip in the chuck. Here's a link:

OOPS. See correction below.

Any welding supplier or industrial house will have bits that will more than meet the needs of any car requirements.

I see drill bit sharpeners for sale. What do you think of them. I think they run a little over a $100.00.

Like 48Flyer, I find the Drill Doctor to be a good machine. Be patient and follow the directions.

Correction to my post above. At Hershey, I've been buying bits from WINTERS Drill Bit City of Winnebago, MN. At Hershey, they're at spaces CB 83-87. Oh, I have a Drill Doctor too. I like it!

If you will tighten up all three holes in the chuck of your drill press or hand drill you won't have to worry about them slipping. This also keeps the chuck from scratching off all the info on the base of the bit about what size etc. the bit is.
