Default 48 Coupe- valve tick

I've read most of the posts on the subject of valve noise, but I haven't found the answer to this question yet.
I would like to know what causes the tick sound you hear when a valve adjustment is slightly over the max, assuming everything else is working properly.
Does the noise happen when the valve face contacts the seat or does it happen when the cam comes in contact with the lifter or when the lifter contacts the valve stem? Or is it happening in the spring somehow?
Is a ticking valve something to really worry about?
Thanks.

Slight tick is nothing to worry about. Try drizzling Marvel Mystery Oil down the
carb while the engine is running and put what remains of the quart in the fuel
tank. Drive for about 40 miles and see if it improves. Also try heavier oil, Castrol
20/50. You can take the intake manifold off and measure the valve clearance and
check against others. G.M.

Generally the ticking is caused by the clearance being too loose. Thus causing the valve to tick when it hits the seat.

I’ve wondered this also,so the noise comes from the valve face hitting the seat? I thought it would have been the lifter hitting the valve stem....... Mark

Adjustable tappets are more likely to make noise ,Fords original system is less likely to as there's a larger contact face on the valve ,Ted

Solid tappets always make a little bit of noise which can get louder as the clearance increases. As the cam follower is pushed up and gains momentum, it will tick when it makes contact with the valve stem. The farther it has to move before making contact with the valve stem the louder the tick. When I hear a loud tick, I generally start looking for a hole in an exhaust pipe or a burned valve but adjustable tappets can come loose and open up where non-adjustables won't.

When a valve is opening or closing it is always under spring pressure so it it loaded against the valve train. They generally won't make noise when they are loaded under spring tension. If the valve sticks then it is a different story. It can make noise then or it will stick and just stay that way.

I'm with rotorwrench on this one, lifter to valve stem noise.

B&S has it. Do a compression check, this might tell you if you have a serious problem, or just a noizey one.

It seems there are different answers to the OP question. I am a little slow so is valve ticking from the lifter hitting the bottom of the valve stem or the valve head coming down and hitting the valve seat? I always thought it was the lifter hitting the bottom of the valve.

The valve hitting the seat is NOT the noise , that profile is controlled by thr cam lobe . The noise comes from thr lifter to valve clearance .

If you have ever slapped your hand on a bath of water there's your answer ,the oil has a cushioning affect a small face cuts through the oil, Ted
