Default Oil Dip Stick

What is the correct spot for the oil to be on the dip stick. Is it center between the L & F or is it more toward the Full or on the F.
Thanks

In between is fine, many prefer it that way.

As long as you have the correct dip stick anywhere between the lines will be fine. These engines are all different and some don't care much about the amount of oil while some do.

However, depending on the amount of sludge in the base will affect the total amount of oil.

All of my cars like it between the L and F.

I drained my oil, added five quarts of fresh oil, and marked the dip stick

If you only drain the oil without removing the oil pan, it will retain about a quart. So normally you would re-fill with four quarts. If the engine has just been run, the level will look low until it has time to drain back into the pan.

You may have too much oil now. When you drain the oil ~1 quart stays in the valve chamber and dipper tray. You now have ~6 quarts in the engine.

I found this out when I first bought my Town Sedan. After changing the oil she promptly let me know she didn't like this by leaking out the rear main seal.

I now run it half way between F and E.

I should have been more clear.
I did this when I first got the car, after draining all oil, removing the pan, etc, etc.
The car had sat in a garage for 53 years, so not a lot of oil in it, I add three quarts and hand cranked the engine, added another quart and hand cranked the engine, added the final quart and again hand cranked the engine.
Then started her up.
She runs good, does not smoke, knock or leak, think I'm pretty much on the money.

I should add that I have changed the oil several times, adding four quarts of oil, it always comes up to the mark I made on the dip stick.

Another country heard from.

Assuming oil pan is clean. A Model A at time of oil change takes 4 1/2 quarts. One 1/2 quart stays in the dipper tray, wii not drain out.

As mention above, all cars are different, some say "if it isn't dripping, it needs filling". We keep ours at full mark, no problems.

I think we can conclude that there is only ONE correct way.

The way that works for you.

I keep mine at the low end of the range.

Now we can discuss detergent or non-detergent.

Sorry. Slow fake news day.

Hey Tom! Pull the pan, empty ALL the oil out of it including the sludge and whatever is left in the dipper.

Reinstall the pan, fill it with enough oil to reach the Full mark, NOW start the car, now shut the engine OFF and see where it measures on your dip stick and now drive it around about 10 miles. Return home and park on a clean spot and see how much drips out.

This should settle the the "height of oil on Your dip stick" and end the conjecture and misreading of the posts and others opinions.
