39 brakes [heres one for the xperts
Pulled the front hubs to do a repack and found brakes are long and long not long and short so here's the questions 1 are the front shoes all the same [the metal shoe not the lining ] if not how do you tell the difference 2 if they are the same what effect would both shoes being fitted with long linings have . Have looked at several drawings and photos and cant see any difference in the shoe itself only the lining All shoes fitted have appear to be genuine as have the ford script logo heavily stamped into the shoe spine as well as what appears to be the double B proof mark [one backwards joined to one forward] At no time did the brakes give any indication that any thing was wrong . My guess is that they were relined around 2000 and fitted with FF grade linings from american brake block [still visible on edge of lining]

Re: 39 brakes [heres one for the xperts
update have pulled rear hubs and didnt find what i expected all four shoes are long lined [had a nasty thought that someone got confused and put all 4 rear shoes{short lining}
on the rear] so looks like scuff up drums and linings and reassemble |

Re: 39 brakes [heres one for the xperts
.
For what it's worth, I've always read that with the Ford/Lockheed brakes, the long-lining/front shoe is the one that does the majority of the braking anyway. With that being said, one would be lead to believe that the REAR shoe (short lining) doesn't really do that much. And I also figure that it was true that Henry promoted NEVER wasted anything, hence....save that extra, unnecessary one inch of asbestos lining material. So, for the next fifty years, the shoe re-liners merely copied what Henry did. In the process, end-users became confused as to which position the "long" lining should go. So in the process, both shoes ended-up getting the long lining, as placing the extra LONG in the rear did not hinder braking action. Plus, nobody can be confused about where the LONG lining goes ANY MORE! Coop/AMERICAN . |
