Ah....Ford part numbers! Once you begin to learn how Ford's system works, it's actually fairly simple. All of Ford's parts have a descriptor, like a distributor, for instance. ALL distributors from Ford (even today) are referred to as a #12127. The prefix gives you the information to determine the first year in service, or at least the year the design was finalized. Below is a partial breakdown of PREFIXES for EARLY Ford parts and what they mean. We'll begin with 1933.

40-12127 = 1933 & '34. ('33 & '34 Fords are known as Model 40s)

48-12127 = 1935 Fords

68-12127 = 1936 Fords

78--12127 = 1937 Thru 1940 Fords

11A-12127 = 1941 Fords ONLY

21A-12127 = 1942 Thru 1944

59A-12127 = 1945 (1946 Thru 1948 Production)

There's a little more to it than that (sometimes), as in 1939, the new Mercurys were introduced, and part number PREFIXES needed a way to differentiate Ford & Merc numbers....WHEN the same type parts were different on a Ford vs Mercury.

Keeping the above in mind, ALL FORD V8 engines from 1932 thru 1942 PRODUCTION were of the 221 cu. in. variety (ending with a ONE). The MERCURYs ALL had 239 cu. in. engines from 1939 thru 1948 (the cubic inches ending with NINE). So, Fords are ONES, and Mercs are NINES...in the PREFIXES. Ford & Mercury BRAKE PEDALS all fall under part number 2455. But the PREfix dates them, AND differentiates the inconsistencies between Ford & Merc from 1939 and after.

So, a 1940 Ford BRAKE pedal will have the numbers "01A-2455" forged onto it.

A 1940 Merc BRAKE pedal will have the numbers "09A-2455" forged onto it.

The ONE (1) in "01A" on the Ford pedal represents the last digit of the FORD 221 cu. in. engines. The "0" (ZERO) represents the zero in 1940. The "A" represents the predominant use as in passenger cars.

The NINE (9) in "09A" on the Mercury pedal represents the last digit of the MERC 239 cu. in. engines (meaning MERC). The "0" (ZERO) represents the zero in 1940. The "A" represents the predominant use as in passenger cars.

So, since the 1940 Ford & the 1940 Merc BOTH use the same distributor, that distributor will be numbered as a "78-12127". The same distributor designed in 1937 (Model "78-12127") is used on ALL V8 engines (221 Fords & 239 Mercs) thru 1940. The Ford and Mercs BOTH got a slightly modified distributor in 1941 ("11A-21217"). The first ONE in "11A" represents the year (1941). The second ONE in "11A" represents Ford, because the design was originally for Ford in 1937 and subsequent years, until change. "A" represents Passenger Car.

Since both Fords & Mercs got identical 239 cu. in. engines for the 1946 production year, engineered & designed in 1945, and since the NEW distributor is for what was originally the MERC cu. in., the new 1946 thru 1948 distributor carries part number "59A-12127", the "5" representing 1945, and the "9" representing "239", the original Mercury displacement size. Clear as mud, huh? DD
