wide 5s

have come across a wide 5 16x5 dosent appear to be a modification any clues as to origin thought they where 16x4 thanks

School bus.Tough to find.Years ago I was looking for a pair after I saw a pair a friend had and thought 37-39 Lincoln's were wider but no they are also 4" wide. 16 X 3.5 were on 36 standards as well as 37-39 V860's.Wide 5's also existed in 18" and 15".

Research showed pickups were 4.5” for 6.50 tire and I believe that also went for Mercury in ‘39. Probably could do 700 tire on 5”, those wheels should be high value.
I had a pair widened to 6”, used 7.50 tires. I test fit the 7.50 on 4” and looked like a bicycle tire. Those goofy wheels were used for mock-up at first, kinda grow on you.

3/4 ton trucks up (not 1 ton) used a wide five wheel which was as I understand wider than those used on passenger cars and p/u's. The photo is of a '41 3/4 ton panel with wide fives.

in Australia lots of 122 wb pickups with floating axles about they ran those rims

Are they wider and yet still have the "artillery" style center ? I have not seen that before. The 5" pickup wheels I have do not look like an artillery wheel, but a more conventional wheel center. I have those in both 5 & 5.5 laying in my junk

I once owned wide 5 wheels that were 16"x 4-1/2" and 16"x5", (and still own some of the 16"x 3-1/2" w5 wheels). These were unmodified original Ford wheels, but I never knew exactly what they came off of. I've never actually seen the 18" w5 wheels that were apparently used on some types of rural delivery vehicles.
I'm sure the old roundy round dirt track racers, who are still with us, could tell you all about the wider versions of Ford w5 wheels and what vehicles they were used on.

Years ago, 1969, I got a complete rear end out of a '41 Ford 3/4 ton pickup
and it had 16x5, wide 5 wheels on it (Not artillery style). I used the rear end
in one of my early dirt track race cars. I got a 3rd wheel from the same pickup,
to use as a spare, but Never had to use it.
I saved that Spare wheel for all these years, and it still looked very very nice
with pretty decent original black paint yet.
I advertised that 16x5 wheel here on the Barn last Dec, and a member from
NY bought it for a fairly high price and was very happy that he got to buy it.
I had a few inquiries, there are still people who want them, in good cond.

Here are some 18” W5s that I ran across a few years back. Based on my measurements they were 3.5” x 18”. I’m not sure what they came off us as they were at a local estate sale with old tires mounted on them. There was no vehicle anywhere in sight at the location of the sale and the folks hosting the sale couldn’t provide any info.

Do the wheels have 'Ford' and/or KH and a date stamped in the rim portion. Most original equipment wide 5's have the Ford/KH identification..
Someplace I have read that Ford offered 17/18" wheels on the thirty model EFV8 vehicles for higher ground clearance.

I’ve checked every wide 5 wheel at the swaps for the 5” but never found them. Good find.

Every wide 5 I've seen has this identification including date of manufacture.

Also, on the 18" rims, look on your own car's spare mount for a second mount location 1" above the first to determine if they were available for your year.

wider on the inside and at 5" you can correctly mount a radial tyre with the same rolling dia as a 600/16 crossply also the offset is correct so no alignment dramas [ie KPI and bearing load ]

I have one like that, someone put a split rim outer rim on a center from a wide 5. Very heavy, and a crappy weld job. There should be a rim with the same ID as wide 5, junkyard shopping with a ruler. Also my research show 3.5” was 60 hp cars, don’t have a desire to have “big n little” with 500 tires on front.

Is the size stamped on the inside of the rim? Been a long time since I had one apart to look. Think I might have a spare or two without a tire on that I could check. I ran 6.50s on my 39 and they seemed fine. I've never seen anything bigger than a 16 inch wide five in the Canadian parts catalogue.
