Default Differentiel gear ratio change?

Hello everybody

Some guy told me that the gearbox ratio from a 28-29 model A rear end is different then a 30-31?

Is this true?

Best regards
Philips M.

My 1928 has the stock 3.70 to 1 ratio, and most all of the 1929 -1931 cars would have the stock 3.78 to 1 ratio.

When I was young people said that the roadsters and phaetons had the 354 rear in them. Is that true? Jack

Is there a noticeable difference between the 2? How much slower would the 28 with 3.70 to 1 ratio be?

The the 3.70 is a very slightly higher gear than the 3.78 so you will go very (and I mean very) slightly quicker with the 3.78 ratio.

Guys I think with the same tires, same engine RPM, 3.70:1 will give you slightly faster ground speed than 3.78:1...

No they all came standard with the 3.78 but I bet a dealer or two may have changed the ratios
I have a rear end with a 4.11 R&P in it. Someday if I get to build my hill climb car that's going in it.

J,

Vince Falter's site says that 3.54's were Post 1934 and available in the AfterMarket for A and B Models.

Not sure what year they came out in Aftermarket.

Read about it here:

When I was putting my '30 roadster together from parts, I looked at old literature, then went to an old timer and talked to rear gearing for my roadster. He said same thing that printed info said, i.e.- Ford thought that to make the '30 roadster seem to be more peppy / sporty , that a 3:54 rear ration would be used. So located a nos 3:54 set and that was installed.

Right or wrong, this gear set works well in a light roadster...it does seem to go nicely.

I have a 29 Special Coupe that pinion nuts came loose. When I took it apart I found it had 4.11 gear set in it. I ordered a 3.54 gear set with new bearings and seals and never looked back, great cruise speed at 50 to 55 mph and I have been 65 mph with out straining the engine.

You NEVER know what "someone" put in these OLD cars! Some people even have "UPGRADED" body parts & pieces!---I have 1999 Stents & 2001 Titanium Screws & a rod from 1981!

To make a car feel more peppy/sporty, you would install a LOWER gear ratio, not a higher one.

I don't know this to be true but have always heard that the 29 Model A was the fastest of the 4 years of production.

Marvin,
I've also heard that the '32 V-8 was the FASTEST V-8, because of some SNEAKY Cam they used, for 1 year only???--I "think" I heard it was a STEEL cam????
