Default Front Brake Drum Question

Why would someone wrap a mile of friction tape around the outside of front hubs? I was trying to clean up a set of front drums to see if I can find a place to mic them. And had to use a sheet rock knife to remove all the tape. The races look good and no apparent damage to the Drums. But what was going on here? These are steel drums with bands welded to them.

probaly to stop the drums from squeaking or squealing, newer cars used a spring aroung the out side of the drum to stop that

I am not sure what your problem is since you should be miking the drums with a drum mike to be sure they are less than 11.060. It sounds like you are trying to measure the thickness of the drum and I have never seen a spec for that from a source I believed.

I always use a Drum Mic but a lot of guys measure the thickness of the steel Model A drums.

Charlie I'm only cleaning them up. I don't have a drum mike I was planing on taking them to a brake shop. To have them mic the drums I was just wondering what all the friction tape was for. The drums appear to be in good shape lite surface rust only.

My guess would be that someone was trying to reduce noise.

Most likely to reduce the noise when stopping. It is the same principle when turning brake drums. To avoid squeal or noide, a heavy rubber band is fastened to the outside of the drum and then remove once the drum is finished being turned.
