cracked window 39 coupe
I just discovered the driver's side window in my 39 coupe is cracked. Do I need to use glass setting tape when I replace it? Thickness? Any other comments on the replacement procedure are welcome. Thanks, Ernie

Thickness is determined by measuring the width of the channel, subtracting the thickness of the glass and dividing that number in half.

Re: cracked window 39 coupe
Restorations Specialties sells glass setting tape on page 37 of their catalog.
Takes a couple of minutes top download. https://www.restorationspecialties.c...talog_RSSI.pdf |

As an aside, I have found Restoration Specialties to be an excellent resource.

Re: cracked window 39 coupe
when replacing the flat glass in our '41, I found the glass from our local auto glass shop a bit thinner than the original

Re: cracked window 39 coupe
Exactly! That's why I posted the formula for figuring out the tape thickness.

Re: cracked window 39 coupe
Maybe you should also figure out why the glass cracked and fix that also......or get an extra when you buy the new glass.

Re: cracked window 39 coupe
Is 1939 glass the same thickness as 1940? My 1940 glass is 1/4 in. thick.
If so, here's some info. from HAMB. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...glass.1201339/ Here's more glass tape info. from Fordbarn. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showt...s+setting+tape Last edited by 19Fordy; 04-08-2022 at 10:12 AM. |

Re: cracked window 39 coupe
When I replaced the vent window on my ‘41 I set the glass setting tape in the sun for a few minutes it made it nicer to work with, I thought the job went very easy.

Re: cracked window 39 coupe
Ran in to this a number of years ago. Side (quarter) glass would not draw up nicely. That's when I measured....

Re: cracked window 39 coupe
Make sure the channel that the glass fits in is straight without any bends. Otherwise you’ll wind up with another cracked glass.

Re: cracked window 39 coupe
Here is what I do. I take the old glass and the channel to the glass shop and let them cut and reset the new in the channel. Why worry about doing it yourself?
