Default Head Gasket

I am dealing with an engine that was bored .125 over and rebuilt at least 50 years ago and only run for a few hours over that time. I suspect, from the noise it is making that the head gasket is not correct to accommodate that over-bore. Before I remove the head, I would like to order a proper head gasket to have on hand. I enquired from Bratton's on their recommendation and here is their reply.
"Once you get out to a bore size of .125” I believe your only option is the 8070 copper gasket. But the issue is this once the cylinder is bored out so large there is not much gasket between cylinder’s 3&4. The gaskets tend to blow out there pretty quickly. To be honest I’m not sure what the fix is to strengthen the gasket between the cylinders"

In the opinion of those of you who have dealt with this issue in the past, should I just go ahead with this gasket as the best available choice or does anybody have any other suggestions?

I did not know you could overbore that much. I'd try the gasket. You don't have a lot of other options. The only other thing you can do it sleeve the engine. I guess you would only need to sleeve it, and hone them, and new pistons and rings if it's only got a few hours of run time on it.

That is top of the line for overboring, after that you sleeve it. Even then, that is too much for my liking. But in response to your question, look at the different gaskets here and find one that is good for overbores.

The best asbestos gasket works great. I’ve always used asbestos. First felpro and now best. I’ve never lost a gasket in over 40,000 miles. The last 15,000 or so was with a 5.5. I am .125”. You should always check the gasket to both head and cylinder.

I thought on an overbore that much the pistons needed to be chamfered accordingly.

Can it be resleeved back to standard when you’re over .125?

Yes it can. Some shops do it when you get to .100.

Maybe the posters pistons weren't done properly. I have run into that where the piston was ok on first start but expanded when hot and hit the gasket causing a knock. an oversize gasket solved the problem.

It was mentioned that the spacing between #3 and #4 is the problem. In addition to using Permatex Head Gasket sealer, would it make sense to use chrome moly studs and increase the torque on the nuts like you were installing a high compression head? Ed

Thanks e everyone for your input and suggestions. In further discussions with Bratton's the gasket they are recommending is made by Best and in their experience is the most suitable. They previously used Felpro but after the R4 revision many users began having problems. So considering what has been said here and Bratton's advice I think I will go with the Best gasket that they are recommending.
