Wow...this place lost 143 cars in a fire last august, now after rebuilding 120 cars hit by a tornado in 3 buildings.

That is a shame. They have a good sampling of cars from all eras and fair prices.
We visited them once and were very impressed. Hope they can rebuild once again. John |

Re: country classic cars again faces disaster
I would be worrying about their insurance carrier now. I had a friend who had two fires, several years apart in two different rented buildings, neither of which were his fault. This was about 20 years ago, and he still has a tough time getting even homeowners insurance. Insurance companies don't like multiple claims.

Insurance companies are crooks to begin with. Would be nice if the government came down on them.

AAA cancelled my homeowners insurance because they saw on Goggle Earth that I live on a canyon. They now want 300 feet from the canyon growth to the house. That eliminates EVERYBODY in my area. I got a good deal with USAA. You might check them.

If those were consignment cars the owners should have insurance on them.

Re: country classic cars again faces disaster
petehoovie is correct when he said "Pretty shoddy building construction." It amazes me that in the USA, so many buildings are made from timber. In Australia, we would use steel framework on a warehopuse like this. With timber construction, it is no wonder that so many houses and buildings are destroyed by tornadoes. In Australia all our motels and units are made of concrete and thus are very strong. Our hearts go out to the owners of Country Classic Cars for this latest loss. |

Re: country classic cars again faces disaster
Steel rafters might have made a difference, but hard to say. Tornados do some strange stuff and with an open span, who knows. Big pressure changes over a very short period of time involved. It is nothing like something like a hurricane.

here in the midwest, we call that a "pole barn'. its pretty much the norm theses days. most are nailed together, windy areas require screws. tornado's do very unpredictable things. your house can be gone, and the one next door untouched

Re: country classic cars again faces disaster
Morton and a few other manufacturers still use wood construction but most are steel type construction in the mid USA. I have to have steel in order to call the shop a "hangar". We pick helicopters up for landing gear work & overhauls plus taking them off of the trailers. The steel beams will hold up to that with no problems. The winds in and around even a force 3 tornado can get over 600-MPH so not to many buildings can take a direct hit no matter what they are made of. I've lived in tornado alley off & on my whole life and have seen some pretty bad damage from them. If a tornado hit someplace like New York, it would do billions of dollars worth of damage. Wheat straw sticking out of fence posts is an interesting thing to see.

Re: country classic cars again faces disaster
Claiming this unfortunate disaster is due to “shoddy construction” without the facts is unfair. A building this size would require permits and be inspected by local officials. As far as insurance companies go.....IMHO they do what they want. If they don’t want to pay...they’ll find a way not to........Mark

Re: country classic cars again faces disaster
I hand propped my airplane and it got away. Totaled. Got check in 5 days. Bought a similar plane and my insurance went up 20 bucks. I was a hobby bee keeper 40 years ago and I had 20 hives out in so cal desert to get some sage honey. A fire came through and destroyed them. My homeowners insurance covered them under unscheduled personal property away from home. A friend borrowed a farm tractor and it caught on fire while under his care. 1000 deductible. I got a check less deductible. Why am I so happy with my coverage. Probably cus I wear white socks

The "facts" are seen in the pictures....

White socks remark is from my old navy days. Will not explain. Tongue in cheek. I try to get a full explanation about what is covered and what is not.

I'm not from Missouri but my Grandmother was. "Show me" is a good statement to make when purchasing insurance coverage. Not everything is covered unless a person is willing to pay for it. Insurance will give you compensation but it can't replace lost treasures or works of art.
When mother nature decides to get rough, there isn't anything you can do about it except get in a subterranean enclosure and pray. |

You may want to check out what happened in Darwin (Australia) in the ‘70s as regards building damage, and construction types, although I think that may have been a cyclone. Most building construction that I’ve seen in Australia is similar to that in New Zealand, and some would not stand up to the tornadoes that they have in the states. |

Re: country classic cars again faces disaster
Yes Clem, we did suffer a lot of damage back in 1974 when Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin. We have learned a lot from that disaster, and our houses and buildings are much better built these days. Above is a picture of the remains of one mans home, but he still is able to add a bit of fun to the disaster. That is a 1971 XY Ford Falcon parked under his house. It looks like it was spared damage? |

As most of the world should be aware California has sustained some horrific fires since early December, 2017. The largest fire to ever hit CA until the most recent fire was right here in Ventura, over 1,100 buildings were lost, over 50% of which were homes and residential units. I was awoken at 12:15 AM, Dec, 2017 by neighbors beating on my bedroom window informing me that my house was on fire. A large gully, barranca, behind my house that is full of large Eucalyptus trees had caught fire. My wooden fences were on fire and the fire was licking at the garage where my '39 Plym convertible is kept. The structure was originally built out of wood in the late '70's, however, age, and termites had seriously compromised the building, so I tore it down in the early, mid '90's, reconstructing it with reinforced cement block. I had disconnected the battery in the Plym for the winter, with the help of several neighbors we pushed the Plym out of the garage into the front yard. With three garden hoses and bailing water from the swimming pool, we were able to keep the fire way from the house until the fire department showed up. Had the garage still been built out of wood, there is no doubt in my mind that the garage would have been a path to lead the fire right to the house. As it was the damage to my property was over $28,k.. My insurance covered everything with no questions asked. I have many friends in the Ventura area that lost everything in the Dec. 2017 fire, in the majority of the situations they were under insured and/or not insured at all. In my mind I knew that it was just a matter of time before the gully behind my house caught fire, it was just a matter of when and how, to this end, I have kept the trees in my portion of the gully thinned out and/or down to minimize the threat of fire to my property.
