Default Still sober

Hello all; Fourteen years today, one day at a time. And no, it's not about me. This is just a reminder it can be done a day at a time, and if you or someone you know needs help, it's a phone call away from your local directory. I wish you all an uneventful evening, Craig.

Your lack of compassion and display of ignorance is incredible. No, it doesn't belong here, maybe, but give a guy a break and tell him "Congratulations!". You wish other Barners a Happy Birthday and so on, don't you?

Congratulations, Craig. What you've accomplished may not seem like much, but as having had a relative in the same position, I can appreciate what a set it took to make it 14-years, one day at a time. Keep it going !!!

Good for you Craig! Beating any type of addiction is a great thing to be proud of and to share with others. This probably gives you more time and maybe puts you in a better financial position to enjoy the hobby that much more..

Now if someone could just help me with this old Ford problem I seem to have. Out in the dirty driveway all day, up in the filthy garage all night. Always late for work, spending all my damn money on rusty parts and weird old tools...I'm sick!
Actually- thanks to the hobby and the barn for keeping me off the mean streets of Boulder, I used to be in the bar all the time, now I'm too tired from wrenching' all day, best midlife crisis may family could ask for!

It's off-topic but very relevant as some Ford Barners would not be enjoying the best things in life if they hadn't found a way to kick a destructive addiction. I know how difficult this can be - I quit drinking in 2001. Several of my former drinking buddies are dead from the same thing. Since then I've found the time to once again work on classic cars and my career is in high gear.

Some repro parts just don't fit or work right. Liver, brain, etc.

Craig, thank you for sharing.

I also want to offer congrats Craig. I was never into drink but smoked pack a day till 1998 when my wake up call was my wife getting lung cancer and passing on. I had semi tried to give it up several times before that. Do not even like the nasty odor from others now and feeling great these days. Stay with it buddy, your doing great !

Hi Phil; No, I wasn't offended at all and I think it was and is an appropriate question. This forum is supposed to be about the cars. I take a liberty once a year as a tradition. Thanks for your kind words, Craig.

Hi Mark; Thanks for your service. Yes I got and stay sober as an active member of our fellowship. Service work and gratitude are a big part of the reason I've gotten this far and hope to stay on the path I'm on, Craig.

After 30 years sober, I'am gratfull for all the friends I've made and all the work I;ve done since. But I regret the 10 hears I lost and the problems I caused my family. I now consider all the flathead guys and gals as part of my family. I say this not to take a bow for my self, but to help anyother person to take the pledge. It ain't easy, but the rewards ore increadable..

On a visit to the USA in the late 80's the saddest sign I ever saw was on a beer joint in East Texas -
" We cash pay checks "

After reading all that's here, it looks like the best option is to trade a bad addiction for a good one. Congratulations guys!

That sign is common in beer joints close to the oil fields.
Oil field workers drink on credit till payday, then they cash their pay checks, and pay their bill.

I had over 35 years in the oilfield.
I worked with a bunch of thirsty lizards.

My only real addiction (not counting early Ford V-8's ) was smoking cigarettes. I smoked about 20 years and knew it was affecting my health. Stopped cold turkey around 1980. It was a tough addiction for me to break but I feel so fortunate now that I was able to quit. I'm sure that some of my family members and close friends are no longer here now because they would not or could not give it up.

You should be very proud ,Craig ! Having watched someone die a very agonizing death from sclerosis of the liver from alcohol and a Dad that didn't stop early enough, I think you have done yourself and your family a wonderful favor. Keep on posting annually to remind others about this terrible disease!
