Anybody used these type of tie downs?

Looking to buy a new open car hauler trailer. I'm thinking about getting at least 2 of these style tie downs for the front wheels-possibly 2 sets for all 4 wheels. Has anybody used these or is this not the way to go? Thanks, Smitty

Tie downs on the axles (front and rear) are the easiest to use. I have the ones with axle straps from Speedway. Summit, Jeg's and Speedway sell 5000# tie downs with axle straps for less than a hundred bucks for a set of four.

i use axle straps also for the reason the model A tire is very large in circumference. there are some who use them on the A but i find it easier to go straight out especially in an enclosed trailer where the room is tight

Have used them and for some reason they seem to work themselves off those big 21" wheels, always keep checking them.

The tire tie down won't stop for and aft movement. Just look at the picture and imagine that tire turning with each stop and go. With at least 4 wheel chocks secured to the bed you'd probably get by.

I use the tire strap on my open trailer. I put the hooks fore and aft of the tire, that prevents rolling. I also use axle straps and a pair of wheel chocks. A little time spent adds a lot of safety. SAFETY IS GOOD.

I would not know, I tend to drive my car everywhere.
But when I first got my car I had to trailer it home, I used similar straps but they were webbed around the tire (not just two straps), I also used chocks and axle straps.
I wasn't going to take any chances.

I use the straps from Mac's Tiedowns that go over the top and part of both sides. They anchor in the front and back of the tire. I also have the tracks that run the length of the trailer. Your car will not move with these installed.

I always used chains and binders. I heard bad stories of rope and cloth ripping/breaking.

Most of the flat bed towies around here use the tyre strap tie downs.
Personally, I use aircraft cargo straps around the axle and diff and have the straps running fore and aft under the car. This is similar to what you have pictured smittykid.

We have ratchets bolted to front and rear to trailer .
Use the straps over the axles.
Fast on....fast off.
Never move...and easy on the car.

I use tie downs around front and back axles. Yes a little harder to put on and store, but I just like the looks of something that may hold the car on the trailer when needed.

At the farm we often have to trailer equipment in for service. We always use straps around the axles (or other cross vehicle constructs). At least two heavy duty straps per axle secured to the trailer outside the vehicle's body length to ensure an easy angle to the trailer floor. This makes them easier to secure, and more effective.

I used tire tie downs in an enclosed trailer. My Coupe was secured nicely and didn't move a millimeter on a 3,500 mile cross-country trip. Got these from Amazon for about $100.

I would image those who trailer vehicles of all kinds often might have more expertize with using tire anchor wraps but I'd think for those who do not might wish to stick with axles to anchor.

alot has to do with where your trailer anchor points are located and if your using open or closed transport..i find in my enclosed the car to wall space is tight and i would rather not rub against the fender.dealing with tire straps.. my tie downs are in frt and behind the cars body so using axle straps are better for my situation and overall space to work. when i strap to the rear axle housing i go around the small part of the trumpet just behind the backing plate. reason being if you strap around the fatter section of the axle tube it can slide down and loosen... i run my straps straight out and do not criss cross them... reason being is if one breaks loose when crossed it will pull the car to one side...

Crossing the straps, or running them straight fore and aft could probably make for a lively discussion but, in either event, make sure there are enough turns on the take up spool of the ratchet. They will slip otherwise. I was cross strapped on a long trip and the straps slipped enough to let the Tudor almost touch the trailer fender well covers. I'm not sure if it would have mattered how the straps were arranged although I'll concede that if only one strap loosened it's probably more likely the car would shift towards the side of the still tight diagonal strap - as it probably did in my case. On the other hand, the fore and aft strapping arrangement offers little resistance to sideways movement unless extremely tight. The vehicle is like a weight hanging in the center of a horizontal line stretched between two points - i.e. - it's almost impossible to control the sag in the line. The other problem with my trailer in particular is that the tiedowns are located such that I cannot achieve a straight line tiedown. Therefore, if one line loosens the other line will also loosen as the tiedown point on the car moves to a point straight forward or aft of the remaining trailer tiedown.
