Ooooh that smell

So.... Pulled my gas gauge and surprisingly after 30 years of sitting in the tank - with gas, the cork was completely intact but it looks like someone coated it with varnish or something.
Anyway - with the new gas and everything I figured better safe then sorry and I orders a gas gauge float from Synder's. Problem was the little washer on the end AND the float was just about a 1/4 inch to big, and I didn't want to attempt to re-bend the wire with fear of breaking it.
I decided I'd take 1/4 off with a knife. Knife went thru pretty easy but the center of these things are kind of brittle. Worst part was the smell !!!! Not sure what they make these out of but the only way I can describe it is - feed your dog anchovies and ice cream, recycle that outcome, burn it and then compress it into a shape similar to a float.
The smell is literally lingering in my nostrils ! I've tried trimming the hairs, blowing my nose and even snorting some water. It's some ugly smelling nasty stuff. Anyone know what they are made of ? I'd love to leave some on my neighbors front porch

No idea what they're made of...almost don't want to cut a float next time I rebuild a gas gauge.

I used a Tillotson Carb float. No bad smell. Works wonderfully so far.

Early on, we taught our sons to sing "Be Careful Little hands what you do" (feet where you go, eyes what you see, etc.) My four year old added "Be careful little nose what you smell." He was right!!!!!!!

hmm they say their made of neoprene. Cant imagine they smell good.

If its anything like burnt electrical coil or transformer smell it will take a day or so to get out of your nose. The smell is actually microscopic particles of the burnt oil floating in the air. Its probably on your fingers and clothes too. Take a shower and scrub really good and or eat spicy salsa or peppermints or something to get your nose running then blow it clean if you can. Also clean your knife off really well as that smell doesn't go away easily lol

get a good whiff of eucalyptus oil, vanilla extract from kitchen, fresh ground coffee, mint, orange oil, etc to override a nasty smell.

could also waft gently at a distance before giving a good snort just to test the water as it were
