Default 3 spd trans

I've got a problem with my 3 spd in my stock v8 53 ford . I looked in my stash and I have a 3spd out of a 49 V8 Ford . many years ago I think we used trannys out of 49to 56 fords. a new cluster was $16.00 bucks and you could buy a whole tranny for $15.00bucks . My question is will the 49 work in my 53. Many Thanks in advance

The transmission itself should fit & work. The gears inside were changed for 1951 & on so nothing interchanges inside between the 49/50 and the later ones. The 1A-7006-A outer case was a direct replacement for all 49 through 54 transmissions so I know they will bolt up. Now this is all for standard 3-speeds. Overdrive types have a lot of little differences over the years.

I believe that you will find the transmission mount on a 51-53 is in a slightly different position than on a 49-50. I believe that you would have to use the crossmember from the 49-50 to do this swap.

The '49 '50 and '51 trans are all 24.5" long, the '51 mount is in the same place as the '52 up mount, but the '52 up trans has longer tailshaft so is longer overall than the earlier ones. The '51 and up mount is wider than the '49 '50 as well. ..B.

Mike...the 52-54 tailhousings are longer than the 49-51 housings. As the others stated, the gears changed in '51, so you can't swap the gears. We have everything in stock, including good used and new gears. Get your tranny out and over to our shop in Milford. We can get it fixed quickly for you..... Mac VanPelt
