47 mercury rearend
Found a rearend from a 47-48 Mercury, and would like to change out the 4-11 that’s in 36 pickup,I believe it about 1 1/2 inch wider !and the drive shaft is longer,...does the scallop flange on drive shaft mean anything,? Can I change the shaft from 36 into 47? Would have to shorten shaft housing also or would the gears fit36 rearend?Still need to find the ratio of mercury before doing anything

Re: 47 mercury rearend
You'll never notice the width difference at only 3/4" per side. In fact, that little bit should make it !ook about perfect in my opinion. The only problem I foresee is the difference between six spline and ten spline at the drive shaft/pinion juncture. You'll have to get a little creative with adapting radius rods to the '36 torque tube, like moving the mounting lug farther to the rear to accommodate the Merc radius rods. Very do-able! DD

Re: 47 mercury rearend
Installing a solid driveshaft (6-spline) and corresponding driveshaft housing from about a 1937-40 Ford should solve your problem. And yes the radius rod mount will probably need to be adjusted.

Re: 47 mercury rearend
Ya know, there's the perfect solution....'37-'40 drive shaft, torque tube and radius rods. The radius rods only need spacers at the mounting lug on the torque tube to fit-up properly. DD

Re: 47 mercury rearend
Isn't the Merc driveshaft and pinion a solid unit?

Re: 47 mercury rearend
I did find info on one piece drive shaft was 39-41.....I also think it’s doable, but need to find the ratio, pretty sure the hubs are locked, looked for numbers on web but didn’t see any, maybe take a wire brush to it

Re: 47 mercury rearend
^^ Ok, Wow, I was just relaying what I had read. Nothings cast in stone with these old Fords. (Ok, Mercs, you know what I mean).
