Default Which way does sector shaft seal face?

Rebuilding '37 box and didn't pay attention to which way the seal faces, one side has a short taper the other side a long taper, which way does it face in relation to the end of the shaft that has Pitman arm on it?

The side with the spring, which I would guess is the side you describe as a short taper should be inwards (or upwards) towards the oily side. Just work out which side would be better for holding the oil in.

Mart, thanks for responding. I went through the trash and found the old seal and it confirms what you said & makes sense now that I look at it closely.
