Default 48 coupe- buggered up a wheel cylinder piston

The wheel cyls were all locked in white powder from sitting so many years. Trying to resurrect them I think I messed up the 1 inch piston on the front. Are they made to come apart like this? Can I use it?
Does anyone know if I can buy replacement pistons or am I stuck getting a whole cylinder? I have the rebuild kits.
Thanks

Thanks oldskool. I guess my question got lost in the narrative.

Does anyone know a source for replacement wheel cylinder pistons?

You should be able to get them off the shelf at NAPA: http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Re...2026066/Nao-10

The little tip component actually fits into a bored hole in the piston, so I'm thinking it really isn't broken. When assembled, it can't go anywhere so it probably will work. Has anyone used parts like this before?

If they were full of white powder , that equals corrosion . So it would be false economy to try and save them for a few dollars. Think safety.

I think that with the corroded aluminum, the cylinder bore is also corroded, and to my mind, that's the main issue... The wheel cylinder cup must ride in a smooth bore surface to seal.

The piston can be ugly as long as it's contact surfaces hold it steady in the bore and support the cup and pushrod...

For what it's worth, I discovered Joblot has wheel cylinder pistons, but not all sizes. Unfortunately they don't have the 1 inch size I'm looking for.
However, they are helpful and appear to be a good source for parts.

Wheel cylinders, especially rears at one time at least, were a big problem. The holes were drilled wrong, severely compromising the safety of the cylinder. I would buy a new pair of cylinders, carefully inspect them to make sure they are right and use them.

I will look for the thread where we discussed the problem.

If the actual cylinders are good enough to clean up with a light hone, and the new cylinders are not the correct type, it may be best to build the guts of the new cylinders into the good old cylinders. That's what I had to do, but that is because I am located thousands of miles away from the suppliers and I had to make do with what was to hand.

Mart.

Unless you can smooth the cylinder bore out perfectly free of pits and corrosion your best bet is to just purchase a new pair of wheel cylinders. NO muss, NO fuss, no rebuild junk parts to go wrong and leak again.

I believe both White Post Restorations and Apple Hydraulics will sleeve them.
