Default Which Books?

I have a birthday coming up and my wife is looking for gift ideas. Which Model A restoration books would make your must have and wish list?

The Service Bulletins would be at the top of the list also Les Andrews Service and Maintenance guide I'm sure there are many others.

Thanks to everyone! We have lived outside of the country and away from my shop for way to long and I will finally get to work on my cars this year.

Legendary Model A Ford: This books gives you a historical context for how the cars were run and can run when proper rebuilt.

Fordlandia: About the rubber plantation attempt, but in the middle there is some talk of how and why the Ford plants took longer to open.

I was in the same situation as you are and I used the search function. You will be surprised how many times this subject has been discussed.

The books I use most often are:
1. Model "A" Passenger Car And Model "AA" Truck Engine-Chassis Manual which is an extract of Dyke's Automobile & Gasoline Engine Encyclopedia;
2. Ford Service Bulletins, the full size and complete set reprint by MARC;
3. The judging standards;
4. Bratton's catalog.

I would vote for the yellow Ford Service Bulletins. A classic. Lots of advice and the history of mechanical changes to the car.

I wrote that a bunch of years ago and it still holds true. I would recommend getting the service bulletins on cd or st least a full size copy. The small bound book is hard to read

Volumes. You need volumes!

MAFCA - "How to Restore your Model A" Volumes 1 thru 7

MARC - "Technically Speaking" Volumes 1 thru 14

In 1967 while in high school study halls, I would bring out my second edition "How to Restore your Model A". I would read and reread the articles but at time I would just stare at the "Before" and "After" photos of the Charles Newton family and their Phaeton.

At that time I had a '29 Tudor and would dream about mine being finished like the "After" photo. Never did get the Tudor done but I did get a '28 Phaeton through the process.

I like the Service Bulletins in the large green paperback. It is easier to read than the small yellow hard cover and contains more pages.

No one has mentioned "Henry's Lady", so I will. It has tons of photos of all the A models and many photos of interior and exterior details not found often. Also the descriptions help greatly. My only complaint is the photos are all black and white. But still a great buy.

Isn't that funny, I didn't even notice they were B & W. There are a few in color photos on pages 241 -248 of cars and truck tho.

I like Ford Model A by Jim Schild also.

I don't know if anyone noticed but this thread was brought out of hibernation by a new member who was trying to sell us crap. Thankfully the powers that be removed his posts.

Anyway, my pick would also be Henry's Lady.

From the Shadows of Coyote Mountain to the Base of Mount Diablo, by David k. Mc Arthur on Amazon. A couple of Model A stories and the life of a poor boy from Idaho to living the good life in California.
