Default Pilot Bearing or Bushing

I'm still trying to track down the "rattling" noise in my '51 club coupe. Anyone know if it has a pilot (ball) brearing or a pilot bushing? If it makes any difference, the car is a late build, delivered to the original owner on July 3, 1951.

it has a bushing, and a worn bushing doesn't usually cause a rattle, just clutch chatter, or a real bad vibiation because the clutch can get off to one side of the flywheel and cause an imbalance on the rotating mass

That's what I expected, but it doesn't make me very happy.

I think it may be wrist pins?

I'd kind of be surprised if the clutch is original. It could have had a ball bearing replacement for the pilot.

I don't recall, did you try running it with no belts?

Ross,

Yes I did and the noise is still there. It goes away if I let the clutch out in high with the car not moving, Also, I can't hear it on the road in high, though it might be obscured by road noise.

BTW, I'll be at the EFV8CA meet in Brainerd next week (weather permitting), and I welcome anyone who wants to listen and give their opinion. (It's only 20 miles from home for me, and since it's not gotten any worse over the last couple of years, I'm going to run down there.)

I had a similar rattle on my 8ba style merc and it went away when I loosened the two bolts that holds an aluminum cover plate in back of the oil pan, don't know why though. John

Wow! You'd think it would work the other way (tighten them to make the noise go away). I'll have to think about thia one; maybe look at one of my spare engines so I can see exactly what you are refering to.
