Default light switch problems

I have 31 coupe and rebuilt steering box so had to pull out which was straight forward enough. The last owner had everything full of grease from box to steering wheel. That was major cleanup but had to done.
It has what looks like new wiring harness.
Did not open switch, just removed off column when installing noticed was also full of grease.
After installing rebuilt column and installing switch the fuse was blowing.
Opened switch and could not remove light switch connector block from metal switch.
Tried cleaning with contact cleaner, but no good.
Got new switch and worked contact block out of old switch.
Connector block would not fit into, new switch.
I've installed switches before, and only problem encountered before was metal pieces not fixing together, resolved with sand paper.
Any thoughts on what to do?

reuse old switch(housing). The problem may be the fit of the connector plate of the harness.

Reproductions sometimes leave a lot to be desired. I try to use the old ones since most of them fit. Finding originals isn't easy. I just use silver paint on them if they need corrosion repair. Most reproductions need work to get them into good fit and function. Some are better than others.

I recently went through the same problems with a friends A. I had probelms reinstalling the commutator ring (plastic) and the metal covers. After cleaning out the grease as you did I decided to use my Dremel motor attached with a mini sanding drum. Carefully sanding the inner and outer mating sufaces of the covers and the OD of the plastic commutator allowed assembling everything without any resistance.
