Default Bad day on the road. Blown motor in Oklahoma

My wife and I left Massachusetts a week ago in our roadster. We've been taking as many back roads as possible. Really enjoying the ride. Blue Ridge Parkway, Smokey Mountains, Ozarks, etc. About 100 miles into Oklahoma, on RT 270 the oil pressure went away and she knocked like crazy. Shut her down. Oil on the dipstick looks like metal flake. AAA towed me to McAlester, OK.

We are on our way to AZ for most of the Winter....well, we were. Trying to rent a box truck or a van and tow dolly. May have to ship my fresh rebuild that's sitting on the garage floor, to AZ. Maybe, I'll just sell it all for scrap. Man am I bummed!

Sorry to hear that Paul. But I'll just bet when the barners and the hambers read the post in the morning you'll have plenty of help.

Dont give up... Get the box truck with the dolly. Get the roadster to AZ and have the motor shipped from your place. You will be glad that you did!!! Ken

Hey man I know the feeling. I was lucky in that it was only a washer down the intake. I still remember the sick feeling when it started knocking. Hope things work out for you.

Paul,
Too bad the motor put a damper on your trip, but you have to admit that the roadster still looks great even on the back of the truck!

Well, this morning, things are looking a little brighter. "Freddys35" called me this morning and it looks like we have a plan to get my roadster to the Phoenix area.

Thanks to all who posted with offers of help and support. Man, this internet, the fordbarn and the hamb in particular, are the best friend we have in the old car hobby.

Lou,
Don't be afraid to drive your car. There's no sense having one, if you don't use it. I knew the reality that something like this could happen. I brought every spare part I could think of to bring. Just couldn't fit a spare engine in the rumble seat. Where would I pack my wife's clothes?

I'll post more updates as this plan with "freddys35" comes together.
Paul

I once had a Volks. There WAS room enough for a spare engine in that trunk.

Paul, sorry to read that your flatty let you down. I just saw this and my first thought was time for a HAMB relay for your engine. But without looking over there yet I'm guessing those wheels are already in motion. Keep us posted on your progress.

Hi Lee,
I have been talking with my AZ connections and they are working a loaner/purchse flathead. Waiting for a call back with more details. I still have a fresh engine in my garage. May need to ship it or, like you say, arrange a "hamb relay." Unbelievable response from the HAMB and fordbarn. But it's what I thought I'd get when I posted my dilima.
Great guys and web sites.

Paul,
I've always wanted to build like yours! Those leary of flathead durability, because of not knowing this style engine, would benefit greatly from followup from you on the cause of such failure! You've helped the likes of me with info at times in the past. Please let us know what/why when you get time. To your knowledge, how many miles were on this engine prior to this problem? TIA, Rick

Paul, I certainly will keep driving the Ford. I was just musing that it sure has been a tough early fall season with two road travelers having engine issues. I know you'll find a way and all will work out okay. As you can see from the responses we are all pulling for you. LouB.

Mike,
Mike Latus found a loaner engine for me. Bruce is picking it up this week. He's getting his garage set up for the swap. Should only take a day and a half. One day, when I do it myself, an extra half with help.
See you soon.
Paul
PS: I don't think I can afford an Abbin engine. Plus they make too much power for my chassis. Sure would be fun to drive one, though.

Dick,
I'm good with pumps. Have a spare, too. Not sure of the bearing size. I'm going to swap out the engine with a loaner. Then get into the engine to see how bad the damage is. I'll try to post what I find. There are several folks on here, wanting to know the cause.
See you at the Christmas party when we fly home.

Paul, If you haven't found any help yet try giving Ray Marler & Chris Whittington at Shoebox Ford In Oklahoma City a call at 800-732-6029. They have everything you can ask for including rebuilt motors & they're only about 120 miles away.

I buy most of my parts there.

Tell them Butchbov sent you.

UPDATE:

Fred (freddys35) Landis, drove up from Forney, TX yesterday and trailered the wounded AV8 back to his place. He and his wife insisted we stay the night with them. We had dinner there and this morning she cooked a real country breakfast for us. Then Fred drove us to the car rental place. We're in Roswell, NM after driving all day. Should arrive in Fountain Hills, AZ tomorrow afternoon. Fred is leaving for AZ on Thursday. After dropping my car off, he's going on to pickup a 33 or 34 2 dr. Fred is quite a guy! Talk about a collection of cars and trucks!! More 35/6 Ford trucks than I've ever seen in one place. 1/2 tons, panels, 1 1/2 tons, fire trucks.........

What a hobby. Total stranger rescues a fellow car guy. Doesn't get any better than this.

it was the 24 stud that has been in the roadster since '07. It had well over 24,000 miles on it, including a banzi run to Bonneville and back, in '08. 6097 miles of hard running. I'm working out the details on how to get my fresh spare out here. I have a couple on plans, in the works now. They will depend on how several, non car related issues work out. We're flying home for the holidays in two weeks. Should have a firm plan after that.

Yes, it is good to have so many friends helping me out. Some, I've known for years and some, total strangers. I've said it before, but what a great hobby!!

Keep the faith Paul, these things happen. You sure have had some good help from some great folks. If I ever have any trouble on the road I hope I'm somewhere near Fred (freddys35) Landis.
I came through Oklahoma one day before you had your engine problem. Otherwise, I would have stopped to help you out in some way. I didn't have a spare FH engine but I did have plenty of tools, spare FH parts, and a car trailer hooked on the back of my truck.
Hope you get to do some cruising soon in AZ in that beauitful AV8.

Thanks John. Looks like my next run XC will be with a trailer AND a spare engine. I really rather drive 'em, but sometimes you have to say "uncle."

Yeah, if you get into trouble on the road, you can't beat a guy like "freddys35." Or, any of the other wonderful people that would do the same as Fred did.

Yes, they are wonderful. I can't say enough good things about them and the folks over on the HAMB. All were so helpful, when I needed it. The moral support we got was just as important.

Full story at the Chrishmas party. Home made backed beans are already on the calendar.
