6 volt question
Hi Gents
My grandson and I are planning a fall road trip. Can the 6 volt cigar lighter charge a cell phone without damaging it?

Re: 6 volt question
I have never done it so I cannot comment directly but I believe the short answer is yes. Most cell phones charge on 5v but all are different. Found this which may be of some help.

Re: 6 volt question
Yes a cig lighter socket in a 6 volt car will charge a cell phone using the phones standard charger which charges the phone at 5 volts. BUT, be sure the cig lighter polarity is correct for the phone charger. Many old cars are positive ground systems. You need a plastic cig lighter socket that is fully insulated and not the older all metal type that grounds through the metal dash panel. Have traveled around parts of Australia with this set up in a 6 volt 1936 Ford with great success. Regards, Kevin.

Re: 6 volt question
If you float a power portm meaning it is not grounded, and connect the center pin to ground and a power wire to ground it will work but in my experience not as well as 12 volt. I have run a GPS off the 6 volts but when I got a new one a few years ago it would not work on the 6 volt. I bought an inverter and now have a 12 volt power port on my 6 volt car. That works great.

Re: 6 volt question
I would be careful with a 6 volt lighter.I think that is an accident waiting to happen as far as burning up you car.Mine is unhooked.Sorry ,just my thoughts on this.

Re: 6 volt question
I used a insulated lighter and reversed the polarity to neg. ground. It runs my Garmin GPS but will lcharge my old flip phone or my smart phone.

Re: 6 volt question
I get these from the dollar store, open it up and reverse the connections.
You can also pull out the guts and mount them onto a piece of plastic and hide it under the dash. |

Re: 6 volt question
Rather than messing around with wiring, voltage and polarity, what I choose to do is carry a booster/jumper battery that has the USB charging port and if necessary will jump start the car.

Re: 6 volt question
I like to listen to music when I’m driving. I bought a JBL Bluetooth speaker and it has a USB charging port.

Re: 6 volt question
Just make sure the housing is plastic, to avoid grounding issues.

Re: 6 volt question
I run a GPS operated speedo in km/hr in addition to my mph calibrated speedo as we are like Canada in NZ. I got one of those USB ports and mounted it under the dash out of sight using a L shaped bracket and an existing hole on the bottom lip of the dash. My system is 6v and I wired it into the ignition with an inline fuse. It works great so the principle would be the same with a phone.

Re: 6 volt question
I miss the good old days. Universally compatible, no batteries required.
