Re: Next stop Wesenberg
Beautiful, and I wish I lived next to the tracks.
When I was in second grade my folks rented a house, which was just about 30 feet from tracks in the back yard. It was a short line for local freight. My friend wanted to put a stick on the tracks and watch the engine cut it in half. I pulled it off and said it might derail the train. |

Re: Next stop Wesenberg
I used to have a couple of quarters when I was a kid that we put on the tracks of a freight line. They fell off after two engines and one or two of the cars, but not before the were elongated a few inches and very thin with very sharp edges.

This is one of our more famous trains in NH, The MT. Washington Cog Railway climbs 5600 feet to to the summit of the highest peak on the Eastern Seaboard.

That's the thing with a cog railway, the cogs keep that from happening. http://www.cog-railway.com/indexa1.htm

Re: Next stop Wesenberg
there is a big gear (cog) under the loco which is what the steam pistons turn. The tracks have a special 'track' down the middle which the cog engages for positive action up and down the mountain. Imagine a really long band of 'gear' teeth all rolled up which has been unrolled and spiked to the center of the tracks all the way up the mountain. Cool and crazy!
There is a brakeman who does nothing on the way up, but cranks hard as he can on the brakewheel on the way down.

Re: Next stop Wesenberg
Hey Dusty,
Where is the location of the photo in the first post? It appears to be Climax or less likely a Heisler. Thanks |

Re: Next stop Wesenberg
Looks like someone did some modifications of the image. If you look on the left side about even with the smoke you will see the same band of trees used three times. Perhaps there was (is) a modern house there.
Anyway, this is an awesome picture. What would be the circa of a train such as that? |

Re: Next stop Wesenberg
If I'm not driving my A roadster "drive" the locomotive on the Downeast Scenic RR in Ellsworth, Maine. One of our conductors has a Blue Grass band and brings CD's of BG RR music to play on the train. Although I can not hear it in the cab, I watch the faces of the passengers as they react to the music during parts of the ride. " Thru the Window of a Train " is one of the favorites. It is amazing how folks on the ground react to us as well. Most all of them wave and the truckers give us plenty of toots from their big rigs.

Re: Next stop Wesenberg
Well, I liked it 'back when' (Oct 2004). It had run for many/many decades as you see it here in this photo. I was told that it is now changed (from coal ) like other more modern thinking wanted (steam?). We enjoyed it immensely as it was !! Just for Toms' comparison, here's our photo of it as a coal machine.
