Default What do you carry with you?

Hello all! I thought I would ask all of you what extras you carry with you (if you do) when driving. I’m thinking of a small duffel bag to keep with me with some tools and extra ignition parts, belt, a fire extinguisher, flashlight, magnet, and a tire pump.
So what’s in your bag?

AAA card. I actually carry far more than any three cars need. I'm thinking of really scaling back. I have a small canvass Craftsman tool bag, hydraulic bottle jack, flares, fan, belt, Marvel Mystery oil, crank. I have 4 military surplus ammo cans with various stuff like spare dizzy, spare carb, light bulbs. Too much crap really.

AAA card, Don’t ruin your trip carrying an extra car in parts. Some people even carry a glossary of parts. If the car is in that bad a shape stay home. Carry a spare tire, fan belt and set of points and the AAA card. You just opened a major can of worms. .

When I drove my restored 29 as a daily driver years ago, I just had the bag of original Ford tools, jack and an extra condenser. I had the grease gun loaded with water pump grease and a little tin of Vaseline for the distributor cam and windshield wiper motor. That was all I needed.

I carry a small canvass bag with common hand tools in it under the front seat. In the bag is also a trouble light for checking voltage points, a distributor by-pass cable, a feeler gauge, and a distributor cam wrench. Under the back seat is a spare fan belt, a spare Zenith carburetor and a spare distributor that is timed for my engine. I also carry a spare lower distributor shaft. The shaft is not for me, but for other people. A number of times I have had to use my spare distributor on other people's car during a tour and several times found the one removed had the long shaft on it. I also carry a suitable jack and a lug wrench.

I do about the same as Tom. But I do have my AAA card and cell phone. Also throw in a tow cable. A lot of the road around here are two lane narrow and it is good the have the cable to be able to have someone pull you to a good parking spot.

I carry tons too much, too much to list here. Am a firm believer if something breaks, it will be something you do not have. So if I carry enough maybe I will not break down.

I do mostly solo driving, am paranoid about getting stuck somewhere. Do not have a significant other to fetch me.

Just the way I am.

WATER. For the radiator or me, whoever is thirsty at the time. A quart of oil, can of PB Blaster, can of ether,( not in the passenger compartment) basic hand tools, wrenches screwdrivers test light ECT, a couple jumper wires, wire nuts, flash lights, a tail and head light bulb, hand crank, bottle jack, blocks for said jack, lug wrench, points/condenser, a couple clean spark plugs, hose clamps, fan belt, carb kit, a pry bar suitable for rotating the engine backwards when the starter binds up, tow strap, a junk blanket to lay on or warmth, a set of channel locks that fit the water pump, a camping shovel, and a roll of paper towels.

And above all else in importance, GOOD pliars and bailing wire.

First aid kit ain't a bad idea either.

Why not just a AAA card and a cell phone. It must be terrible contemplating a breakdown every time you start the A. Can’t imagine your trips are much fun ! O

Maybe because I often find myself in non metropolitan areas, where AAA response time can be up to 6 hours,

Maybe because I don't pay for AAA,

Maybe because I'm almost guaranteed no cell service in many areas I go,

Or maybe, just maybe, because I enjoy a degree of self reliance, faith in my OWN skills and abilities, and take pride in handling bad situations on my own. Maybe that's it.

And contrary to what you may believe, I have more fun with my rattly rusty driver quality A than any restored show queen I've owned.

*Add to my last post, a handful of assorted fasteners in the bottom of the tool bag can be a life saver.

I would like to add though, the phone is a great plan, I do carry one. Try as one might, it's nearly impossible to plan for everything.

I really think the canvas tool roll is the berries. Bucket boss has the expensive ones, but there are good ones for less than $10. Unroll it and you have all your tools.

When we are on a long trip, we are usually outside phone range so I have to expect that if the car stops, I am the one who will have to get it going. I carry a set of tools (spanners, screw drivers, pliers etc,, jack and handle. There is a distributor and carburettor (never have needed either), some electrical wire, fan belt and test light. A spare tube (from when we couldn't get a decent one) is always there and a stick of Kneedit (an epoxy putty).
Because a repair might take a while, we have a toilet roll, food and water. We have had to make some what I think are clever improvisations but we've always gotten home. IMO, the best thing to take is the gap between your ears filled with knowledge about your car.

IMO, there is no reason to have to "contemplate a breakdown every time you start" a well maintained Model A. I go over my model A after a outing and check it again before the next.

Yes things can happen, but they can happen on a modern also. I'm certainly not going to let it spoil my fun.

That said, I do carry a small tool box, Halotron fire extinguisher and a first aid kit 'just in case'.

Yes. Not a complete carb but parts of the kit. After apparently getting bad gas, and having the carb apart 3 times coming home.

The belt, was after replacing the fan belt as part of "good maintenance". Did it while I had the radiator off, why not, I was there. Threw the take off under the seat. The new one separated about 30 miles from home, ( about a month old, maybe a hundred miles on it.) Put the take off back on and drove home.

Bob needs to add a couple of fuses and or circuit breakers, fire extinguisher, first aide kit and a fan belt. Maybe a trailer hitch and trailer... to tow the spare Model A.

The usual plus a bottle of aspirins, a few nitro tablets and a wire cutters.
The jack, spare tire, tool bag should go without mention.
A roll of paper towels can be handy too.

I should have a tire pump and fan belt, but i can't find a tire pump anywhere. And anyone under 50 seems to be "What's a V belt?".

I do tend to carry a tiny bottle of oil. Swiss army knife, screwdriver or 2. adjustable spanner. And lately i've been reminded of the value of a packet of chewing gum. Can patch all sorts of leaks with that.
Also, a candle and piece of soap. Amazing what you can lube or patch with those. A stick that you can carve threads into with a pocket knife is handy if you lose a sump plug too.

This is not to be underestimated. If more people did this (regardless of what brand car they drive), there'd be a lot less break downs in the first place.

Bob made a nice post, but I'm curious, I see masking tape in the bag but not on the list? Also, where's the head gasket? I didn't see it on the list or in the picture?

Something I try to do, is carry proven ignition parts. As in not buying new ones for the road kit. I'll do a tune up when the car is running fine, polish the points, and carry those. Nothing more aggravating than defective new parts. Except digging through all the junk I carry trying to find said parts.

Anybody carry road flares? Or reflectors?

Let's hope I never "NEED" it. Why do you feel you might "NEED" a 410? I'm really curious how bad things are that you need that.

I have this in the truck. In case I feel uneasy driving at night, which I rarely do. Stick it on my tailgate. It is very bright, very noticeable. Very strong magnets, but I have also added a tether.

One tool I always carry in my tool box is a KNIPEX Raptor Pliers. They take the place of ⅜" up to 1¼" wrenches. Good back up for regular wrenches.

In my country, we've been blessed that the 2009 GFC was over for about 5 years. No longer had rough people forming road blocks demanding 'gifts'.
Although that might make a return after this virus....

In most cases, what i'd love one for is weasels & stoats, they can't hear me coming apparently, see the little critter crossing the road with feather in their mouth & think "Gee i wish i was allowed that thing right now".

Then there's guys who have snake problems & i'm thinking to myself "How do you guys deal to a snake with that?". Must have better hand eye co-ordination than i do.

And i forgot something i carry in the car often now. Bike tire patches!

I haven't carried my Model1928 Thompson (full auto/legal) with me yet..... But "back in the day", depending on your "business", it might have been
a necessary part of the tool kit.

Haha, super nice! I've never shot one and I'd bet it's a BLAST.

I'd imagine with the weight theres not too much recoil?

That would look the part if the back was full of crates of bottles.
There was this one time, i saw some people in a tudor with full 1920s frilly hats and feather scarf things, and the passenger has a broomstick with a movie reel film canister under it & some other bits of carved wood that looks a lot like that. Was pretty lol. They were smiling.

History,

It is a blast to shoot, but can be expensive unless you do your own reloading.

Recoil is not bad, but the barrel climbing while shooting full auto can get out of hand. Short bursts are recommended.

Around town, not a whole lot. A sack of tools always stays in the car as well as a jack & lug wrench.

On long trips, I take one of everything. Water pump, carb, distributor, axle keys, fuel pump, gasket set, wire & crimpers/connectors, etc.

I already have these items sitting on the shelf at home, so why not pack them if in the trunk or under the seat for protection if something does go wrong. I have rarely needed any of the big items, but it has been nice to just do a quick carb switch instead of having to dissect the one on the car on the side of the road when crummy gas clogs it up.

I actually tried carrying a carb, but didn't have much success. First I overhauled one, put it on the car and ran it. Satisfied, I took it off and drained it, let it dry, wrapped it in a towel with some moisture removing packets, and put it under the seat. When I went to use it on another car, it was gummed up, and the gasket leaked, had to take it apart and rinse it out. ( All with non alchohol gas)

So, rebuilt it later, left it dry. Same packaging. Put it on yet another car we were messing with, and the seat wouldn't seal. My assumption after disassembly was that the seat rattling back and forth dry somehow damaged it. Float setting was correct, just wouldn't seal.

Now, I carry a kit. And a disassembled carb on the running boards at Walmart really confuses folks, so that's fun.

Any suggestions for carrying a spare carb to avoid these problems? As the idea does make good sense.

PS: the carb kit box would also nicely store a AAA card ....

Store the carb in the up right position, so the float valve is not seated and bouncing around?

Remove the float valve and store separately, install when needed, it is only one bolt to split the carb?

I'm remembering I couldn't fit it upright under the seat, good thought. May have to explore other storage options and try again. ( I'm in a 31 Sport Coupe,)

And storing the needle separate brings me back to taking a carb apart beside the road, was my thinking on why I just carry a kit. Although having a fresh clean setup to just drop the needle in and install is very appealing.

Also, from our previous conversation on the led safety light, I have a couple but they didn't work well for me on the A. Not enough flat real estate. Works on Dad's PU though. For my car I put some reflective DOT tape on magnetic sign material, too stick on the fenders.

Try using a needle w/a viton tip.

@Blue-Truck-Nut

Am not familiar with storage space on Coupes. No room behind the seat, or in the trunk/rumble seat?

For certain spares I like to keep fresh (like a spare carb) I use zip lock bags with the slider zipper, and desiccant bags. Then put that in a bubble pack bag that seals. The place I worked for shipped spare electronics to our techs, so at the time the bubble bags and desiccant was easily available to me.

I make sure the carb is dry, run it out of gas, drain it, remove it, split the carb halves, remove the float valve, turn it every which way , and with low pressure blow it out, apart let it sit in the sun for a while, blow it out again, and then reassemble it. Yes, am a little anal at times.

If using desiccant bags, was told to keep them in a cool low humidly environment so they would be dry/little moisture absorbed. And is best if the parts/bags are also in the same low humidity environment when packing the part.

Was talking to one of a fellow club member who told me he uses baking soda and very small thin paper bags, uses a needle to poke holes in the bag, to make his own desiccant bags. He tested by putting metal and his homemade bags in a Ziploc bag. Then stuck it in the fridge, and then in the bathroom when showering - no moisture in the bag at any time.

3rd Brake light - the one I used, even though I did not use them, came with suction cups for use on the interior of the rear window. I think there was a couple of short standoffs and long screws with nuts - this would require drilling holes in your A. I like mine on the tailgate of my truck - I think it is more noticeable, Leds seem to be brighter when seeing them straight on than viewing at an angle, and are more at eyelevel of people following you.

Thanks! All good advice. I carry stuff in the floor of the rumble seat, it's just a pain to reach at times. But it works.

The sport coupe has a cloth top with a rear window with a zipper. The window itself makes a pretty good reflector, and moves a lot, so it catches the eye. I'll ponder on all that some more.

Hopefully I can get the car out in May or June

Oh man you were close to me then, of course I was stuck on a dairy farm 24/7 unless in school.

I did fire an mp44 on full auto and it would also climb. By the third shot I would be off target every time. It was neat and also very expensive as the ammo isn't as common. Also got to shoot an mg-34 and a jap type99 that was converted to fire 7.62x39, both were so much fun. Did this at a gathering in Alabama of mainly militaria collectors who brought their weapons for others to enjoy, it was a fun couple of days. Ive never fired an mg-42 and imagine with its rate of fire it was devastating to us troops who faced it. My great uncle was killed in Germany during WW2 by either an mg34 or 42 while trying to over come 6 machine gun pill boxes.
