Default Sediment Bowl Gasket

While the engine was out I figured I'd clean up other things under the hood and took the sediment bowl off to clean it. Upon filling up with gas now, the cork gasket no longer seals. I have a new cork gasket but was wondering if you guys recommend any sealant before installing it?

Fuel lube will seal it up easy. Coat it with a light to moderate film. Fuel lube never hardens, is a great lubricator for fuel valves, etc.

I have found it is hard to reuse them. They are cheap, just put the new one in, make sure it Is seated properly and tighten. Do no use the rubber one.

I suppose I should count myself lucky then, I've reused this gasket once and how old it is is anyone's guess.

I was planning to fire up the engine for the first time last night but gas dripping from the sediment bowl so close to the exhaust made me reconsider... with my luck the whole garage would have burned down

Keep 1 or 2 (or more) spare gaskets w/the vehicle.

When I had a sediment bowl I bought a dozen gaskets, I put a new one on whenever I cleaned the bowl...no sealer.

At my age of 77, and having dealt with bowl gaskets on my tractor and now, my Model A, sometimes they reseal, sometimes they don't. The local rural auto parts store carries them, I don't keep extras laying around, as when I would need them, I doubt I could find where I put them. And on sealers, tried it once, and it still leaked, then I had the problem of cleaning both surfaces to install a new gasket! Also tried making one from cork gasket materials. I now just go up to the auto store here locally. I look at it as them storing the gaskets for me and I just get one when I need it.

I agree with burner 31 in post # 7 . I had one of my model A's burn in the driveway in 1962 because of a leaking sediment bowl gasket . I now mostly use the cast iron sediment bulb type filter . The lead gasket that is used with the cast iron bulb can be reused . I believe that Ford went back to the use of the cast iron sediment bulb in 1931 . I feel that the cast iron bulb is safer and looks better .

I had this same problem until I realized the "order of Materials" was important sequence is screen, gasket, glass.

New gasket is installed and sealing well but I have exciting new problems . Just posted about it. My first time setting up a new engine so I guess it's to be expected.
