Lock it or Lose it
Hi All,, OK I searched the topic and could not find the answer. I have a NOS Hurd lock cylinder for my 41 pickup ignition. Someone has removed the original and drove a wood dowel in its place I assume to hold the lock pin up. My question is what supposed to hold the cylinder in the drop? I see a hole in the back side of the drop , it appears that something should go in it and into the side of the cylinder but what.? I see no threads in the hole. Thanks

Re: Lock it or Lose it
A pin is used to hold the lock cylinder in the housing. It's press fitted into the small hole in the column drop.

Most of the time when you find a cyl out that has been out for years, the pin has been drilled out. Original pins are available I believe from some of the vendors. If drilled out, you may need to tap the hole and put a setscrew in.

Re: Lock it or Lose it
The last one I did, my 34, someone had drilled it, and wallowed the hole considerably. A #12-28 was the smallest I could go with. Personally, I wouldn't go with the pin. If I would ever want to service it in the future, it's easier to deal with a set screw. IMO

Re: Lock it or Lose it
Thank you all, Looks like someone drilled out my pin as the hole is over 1/4" and sloppy. So this will be a little more involved then I thought. But we do love a good challenge don't we? Thanks again, Tim

You don't want to drive around with a missing lock cylinder as that would allow the locking pin to drop and snag the shaft and lock the steering shaft...... not good at all.

Re: Lock it or Lose it
I've always tapped it for a set screw, same with the break off bolt that pins the column drop to the column.
