Default Surface rust in Houston

Even kept in the garage un plated or blued parts on my 36 woodie get surface rust here in Houston. It is so humid that the grass gets watered with dew every morning. Here I am removing some surface rust on the front discs with rust911. I mix it up 2x strength and it works much faster than Evaporust. Will be painting the rotors with black epoxy primer except of course for the stopping surface. Calipers to be painted as well.

I'm getting the 36 ready to sell. My 41 woodie out in California now has a new set of wood by Ron Heiden. Everett Bros of Fallbrook are painting it Lochaven green. Hope to be ready for Wavecrest in September.

My dad had a shop there in Houston, Mills, planers, jointers, they all get surface rust on them quick if you don’t keep them wiped down.

Isn't that the reason a flathead leaks a little oil? for rust prevention and lube of the chassis. Just a joke... kinda.

Wipe it down with wd40 and spray it every once and a while. Brake discs will burn off some wd quick. Some 30w oil for the rest of the car should do.

Wasn't it how some dudes in the 50's shined up their show cars before a local show. 30w.

When I was in the Army guys would use brake fluid to shine the tires, like armoral. I always thought it was destroying the tires.

Try Boeshield T-9, it works VERY well keeping surface rust off of bare metal. I have a cast iron bellhousing that I sprayed it on after blasting and it still doesn't have a spec of rust three years later.

Boeing did some homework when they developed that stuff but they are sort of proud of it at $10 or more a can.

It's comparable in price to the GIBBS lubricant, a similar product that people recommend.

Rotorwrench where are you seeing it for $10? Amazon is $19. There are two sizes (among others) 4oz and 12oz is that the price difference or is Amazon just that much higher in price?

It was a Wally World Google Ad. This usually means it comes from some unknown supplier and it's usually the smallest size available. I figured that would be the least it could be had for so it goes up from there. T-9 & Gibbs are both good products but both are expensive too.

Do like Jethro Bodine and rub coal oil on it. I use Vactra #1 oil same as on my lathe. It's messy but it lasts a long time.

On my table saw, joiner, lathe, mill and cutoff saw plate I use Johnson Paste wax. Does not collect dust and work pieces slide easy.

A similar situation here on the northern California coast.Humidity but with cool temps. After I sandblasted parts of my coupe, I gave them a coat or two of Ospho. Some of the parts sat in the garage for three years.....zero rust. I have a pair of 21 stud heads and an intake that I soaked in vinegar four years ago to get rid of the rust.Once the rust was eaten away,I coated them with Ospho as well. Still perfect and they have been stored in the shed.
