Default Installing Engine Pans

I have just finished installing engine pans on my second car. These are powder coated black and are just beautiful up to a point! These pans can go on only one way and in one position due to the drilled holes in the pan. The reproduction pans may be exactly original, I don't know but the "U shaped" cutout for the exhaust pipe does not line up properly. The cutout should be enlarged or moved 1 in. toward the outside of the car. For me, it has been frustrating to get the exhaust pipe flanges lined up on the exhaust manifold and not have the exhaust pipe contact the engine pan. I used wood wedges to hold the two parts apart while I forced things together and tightened the nuts. It would be such a simple solution to either enlarge the slot or move it over!

OK, I have vented my frustration and I feel much better now! Ed

It's more important to have no have exhaust leaks at the manifold/tailpipe connection than a perfect line up where the tailpipe passes by the engine pan. Got tin snips? Or, can you bend the pan over a bit?

I have installed two sets over the last few years. Never had a problem with the exhaust pipe placement. Did you contact the supplier?

I agree with Ed. Those pans can be a pain. I had to modify mine too.

I have a new exhaust manifold and an Aries muffler. Could it be your exhaust manifold is warped?

At any rate, if your car is not a points car, I would trim to engine pan.

FWIW, I tap the holes in the frame to accept bolts so I don't have to deal with the nuts when installing the pans.

I don't think Ed what's to ruin his nice new powder coating.

I think Patrick is right. Sometimes powder coating works against you.

The late 31 engine pan on the exhaust side has a wider slot than earlier pans.
