Default Y Block Distributor

Does this appear to be a correct statement?

I think I figured out the distributor issue.....The distributor that I have was for a '57 plus y-block as far as the rotor button goes. I finally found the code for the part number on the distributor C9ZF-12131-A. The C9 indicates a '69 manufacture date. the 12131 indicates its for a 302. the suffix of "A" indicates it was a service replacement part for a Y-Block.

can anyone shed any light on this?

Many thanks.

As far as I know, C9 means 1969, Z is Mustang. As far as I know 12127 is the base number for a distributor, and not 12131. Anyway, that's the base number for distributors. Not sure what the "A" stands for. Definitely doesn't sound like a Y-Block distributor. The latest for that would be 1964. Probably either a 302 or 351 Windsor '69 Mustang. Could even be for a 428. I don't know what the "A" stands for.

I just recently bought a rebuilt dist. from auto zone. the brand is cardone. I showed it to my brother, who is very knowledable about ford stuff and their numbering system. he told me that the part #on the dist. I bought was for a early 70's 302 and machined to fit a y-block. he is a machinist by trade and said they spent more money on machining than the dist sold for. I am sure that it was done off shore. I haven't tried it yet as we are going to convert it to an electronic ign. using a Ford dura- spark reluctor and pick up and a Chrysler ign. box. these parts are available everywhere, and you get a very hot ign. spark. . I did notice that the distance on the shaft below the gear is about 3/8 of an inch shorter than an original. I do not think this will be a problem, at least I hope not.---Jim

I think what you guys are looking at might be service replacement distributors manufactured after production ended in 1964 for the y-block.

I have two Motorcraft C9ZF-12131-A distributors for Y-Blocks in my possession that also have 12127 cast into the body. Both have the triangle shape and 'O' ring seal where it goes into the block.

Or it could be whatever this guy above ^^^^ is talkin' about...

Alaska Jim, wasn't pointing at you, honest. There was a post in Russian or something I was pointing to.

Hey, no problem, just an honest misunderstanding. we are all just human. I value the opinions and knowledge of all you guys here on the forum. until recently I have not worked on Y-Blocks since Just after high school, so I am a bit rusty on them. regards,---Jim

Y-Blockhead wins. I verified this is a service replacement part manufactured in '69 for a Y-Block. I picked up a later model rotor and cap specified for a 1958 Y-Block and it drop right in. Thanks for the replies

Alaska Jim, I just returned a Cardone rebuilt distributor to the parts house because of the short shaft below the gear. I was concerned that the hexdrive oil pump rod would not engage far enough into the distributor shaft, if at all. The replacement they supplied was the same as an original. There may be longer pump drives available to make up the difference.

Thanks Dominic, good to know that they will exchange it. I have not made up my mind yet as to whether I will use the one I have or exchange it for a different one.----Jim
