Default 1931 pickup license plates

Would a 1931 Model A pickup use standard license plates or commercial? Thank you.

I think it depends on what State plate you are working with.

I was able to find 1931 Michigan Commercial plates online, so I’m guessing you should have a Commercial plate.

I and a number of my friends have pickups in Michigan and use standard plates.

I hear you can get new vintage plates made rather than trying to restore, or pay a lot of money for one that needs a ton of work.

In California there is a DMV statute that exempts Model A commercial vehicles. including pick-ups, from being required to have commercial plates.

However, if you go to a California DMV office more than likely they will tell you that you need to have commercial plates and will send you off to have the vehicle weighed.

For that reason, you need to take the attached document with you when you go to the DVM to be able to educate them. It is also best to carry the document in the pick-up in case a cop stops you and says you need to have commercial plates.
