Default Removing inside handles on Shoebox???

Is there a trick to removing inside door handles and window cranks on a 49 shoebox??? Do I need a special tool to do so? My outside moldings have a lot of dings and dents and I am going to replace with NOS but need to remove the door panels to change them. Thanks Fordbarn

The door handle escutcheon compresses to reveal a pin that holds on the handle, it should come out easily. The escutcheon holds the pin in place.

Although the later shoeboxes come with the spring clips, I believe you are right about the '49's. I don't really remember, but were the pins tapered so they would only come out one way? Might be something to consider if you're having a problem.

Pins were not tapered. For replacement pins, I used pieces of nails. In fact, I used nails to push out the pins while compressing the escutcheons

The trick was to put the nail on the top of the pin, release the escutcheon to hold the nail, compress the bottom and then use a small hammer to drive the pin out.. Since the nail was longer and stuck out, it was easy to remove with pliers.

Here is a tool I made to push the escutcheon back for easier access to the pin. its just a piece of 1/4" thick scrap wood.
