Default odd aluminum heads

I was provided these heads to put on the owners truck, they are odd in that the top radiator hose outlets come straight up. Offy 400 heads. What were these heads made for?

I bought a set of those heads in 1963 for $5 when flattys were loosing popularity. I was told they were for boat engines. I did use them on my 40 Ford with an 8BA as shown in this old photo. Sold them years ago for $100 as corrosion became a problem. I think I still have one of the goosenecks if you need one.

I have those heads on my 53 8BA. I used the straight water neck that 51 Merc-ct showed. With Ol Rons guidance I had them milled down to achieve the right chamber clearance. The only problem I had was the oil fill tube was directly over the water neck. I capped the oil fill hole on the intake and made a breather/oil fill tube at the back of the intake in place of the fuel pump. I run an electric fuel pump anyways. Engine runs well.

I'm told that these heads were first run 48 thru mid 49 Offy products and were discontinued in favor of the normal stock configuration. I have a set of these as well. I;m also told that using Latex paint on the alum side of the head gasket will eliminate the corrosion, at 85, I;ll probably never know if thatd true or not.

I had never seen them before. may have to be creative to put offset generator on with these connections. Oil fill will work without a problem
