Shutoff valve leak
I have a very small gas leak at the shutoff valve. I have attempted to tighten it and it still has been leaking, although alot less. It does not appear it can be tightened any more. Do I need to drain the gas tank and clean the valve or replace the valve and reassemble?

Re: Shutoff valve leak
Well you didn't say what year so I will tell you on my 31 indented firewall I had to replace the valve and inserted a screen at the same time. I tried several things to get my old valve to stop leaking but utlimately a new valve solved the problem.

Re: Shutoff valve leak
Both rebuild kits and replacement valves are available from any of the vendors. Replacement is a little bit more expensive, but it sure is easy. It is a good idea to install an inlet screen like TinCup suggested.

Re: Shutoff valve leak
Thanks for the advice. I will replace the valve and add the inlet screen.

Seems like that screen would be a royal pain to clean if it gets clogged up from a lot of rust fast no? |

Re: Shutoff valve leak
Had same problem with my 31 Slant. It required a gas tank drain and a new shutoff.

I have never had a problem with that with any of the 4 Model A's that I have owned. The screen filter keeps the rust particles floating around inside the gas tank instead of entering the fuel line and clogging the line or the carburetor jets. |

Re: Shutoff valve leak
I made a little tester.
Rebuild the valve and put low air pressure on and test it in a bucket of water Works for me. PS. bought a new one some time ago tested it before installing and is was leaking! Last edited by Joop; 11-22-2010 at 04:33 PM. |

Re: Shutoff valve leak
The fine rust is not too much of a problem, but any little chunks of hard rust will score the valve. That's the part I don't like. When you turn it on or off you can be trying to shear those little pieces in two, scoring even a new valve.I use the finger screens in everything I take apart.

Re: Shutoff valve leak
Ditto what Keith said. My tanks are very clean and rust free, but I always use screens in any gas tank, including my motorbike.

Re: Shutoff valve leak
I've had 2 "in the tank" screens that each lasted 10 years before they started to clog and cause problems.
