Original owners of a Model A
Is there anyone or does anyone know of an original owner still around or someone who back in the day purchased a brand new Ford Model A... Yeah they would have to be likely over 100 at the youngest.... Their story of buying it would be interesting..

Re: Original owners of a Model A
My father-in-law shared a story with me before he passed last year. He grew up in southern Ohio, when he was 6 or 7 years old his father purchased a Model A school bus and had to pick it up at the Columbus factory about 80 miles from home. He said a sales guy drove down from Columbus and picked them up, he didn't know exactly what they were picked up in but it was a Model A with a back seat. They went to Columbus and picked up the bus, he said he sat on the stairs by the door all the way home.

Re: Original owners of a Model A
Back in the 1960s, I encountered numerous people who purchased Model A Ford cars as new vehicles. Bought two of those cars from the original owners. Interestingly, both were 1931 Fords and each seller was a woman. A lady from Gilmanton, (Peyton Place) New Hampshire operated that 31' sport coupe around the Lakes region from the time when new until 1967 when I bought it for $500.
At this point in the later half of the second decade of the 21st Century, an original Model A Ford new car buyer would need to be a minimum of about 110 years old. |

Re: Original owners of a Model A
IF my Dad had bought a new Model A, he would have only been 11 at the time. He was 96 when he passed earlier this year.
He did own several along the way, in fact brought me & Mom home from the hospital when I was born, in a Tudor Sedan, I think he said it was a '29 or '30. All 3 of my Model As have been 10 years older than I am.

I looked a 1930 Model A coupe that was purchased new by the grandfather of this guy's wife. It was for sale.

Re: Original owners of a Model A
My mother inlaw who just past away at 103 years old told me stories of driving her fathers Model A when she was young. She remembered just where the gas tank was. My car was driven by the wife of the Ford dealer in Jefferson PA. She was (no kidding) a school teacher. She drove that car for over 50 years. Even used it as a school bus. I have met the lady who bought it from her so I have a nice history of the car.

Re: Original owners of a Model A
Wasn't there an article in one of the national magazines of couple years ago regarding a man who bought Model A new and drove it for over 1,000,000 miles I think. I forget how many engines he went through. Anybody remember this?

Re: Original owners of a Model A
My dad was 21 when he bought my cabriolet new in late 1929. It was purchased very shortly after the October crash, but he was from Woodland CA, a small town west of Sacramento, and he was not really aware of the stock market crash's significance. He had a quail radiator cap, but nothing else in the way of accessories.
Dad has been gone since 1980, I have had the car since 1958 or 59. |

Original owners of a Model A
Yeah, there is a guy around town here that bought his 'Model A' new. He still drives it around town. It is getting harder and harder to find original owners who actually did buy a new Shay.

Re: Original owners of a Model A
There was a guy from a town northeast of Philadelphia, Pipersville, maybe, named Frank Hartmeier, I believe. He bought a new roadster in 29 when he was 17. He drove it all his life till he was about 97 whereupon he donated it to the AACA Museum in Hershey where it is on display.

I am the second owner of my Model A. I bought it at the estate sale of the original owner in 2,000.

Re: Original owners of a Model A
Pretty hard to find I bet. Most of the older people that I meet who admire my car ask what kind of car it is.

Re: Original owners of a Model A
My father bought his 1929 Town Sedan new. Went to Detroit to pick it up and drove home to Kansas City in a raging snow storm. He kept it as his only car until his death in1963. I learned to drive in and fix cars on dads A. Changed my first clutch at the age of 14. Many happy miles traveling with dad in his A.
