Default F1 steering column question--

On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being easiest) how difficult is it to remove the column shifter pivot thingy from the top of an F1 steering column? Does anyone have experience here that can give me some methodology? Thanks!

Look at it closely as I think that collar is just pressed onto the steel tube. If that is the case then you can split the collar with a hack saw or Dremel to relieve the pressure and it should slide off. Are you going to a floor shift?

Yes on the floor shift.

So, I got the bracket off and here are two lessons:
1. The mast itself goes all the way to the end of the shifter bracket. If you're cutting (like I was) and see daylight after you've cut through the bracket, you've gone through the mast as well.
2. The bracket is spot welded to the mast in three places. One on the bottom and once on each side of the bracket. If you clean up the inside of the mast (I didn't.) you might be able to see where the welds are and drill them out. (Didn't do that either.)

Well, I used my trusty angle grinder with a cut off wheel and got the bracket off in pieces but the top of the mast is a bit ragged. I've got some more work to do cleaning things up.

Next up is doing some cutting and bending on the F1 column drop that came with the steering box. This is all going into a Brookville body A roadster with a '32 style dash.

Easiest would be a new piece of 1 1/2" exhaust tube and make a new one

Pete, thanks for the followup info. I think cas3 has the right idea for your project. Years ago I did use exhaust tubing for my project 36 roadster. I also used the modified F-1 column bracket for the project.

You've got me starting to think now. (I had given up thinking for Lent.) there's also a hole in the tube down below the firewall for anchoring the little box where the shifter rod goes in and the two rods to the transmission go out. I gotta plug that to keep gunk out of the box. Hmmm...

Thanks!

If you use a column tube from an early F100 it has the self cancelling turn signal option on the top. Easy to adapt.
