1937 V-8 Alternator
Hi all, I'm asking for a friend. He has a '30 Ford Woodie with a '37 V-8.
Does anyone sell an alternator kit for this engine? He has the cooling fan mounted on the generator pulley. The car is still 6 volt. We tried at Power Master but no go. Any help would be appreciated. |

Re: 1937 V-8 Alternator
You can do it fairly easily, takes a bit of cash. The least ugly way I have seen it done is using a 39-48 Powergen alternator with an Offenhauser alternator pulley with fan mount. There are other combinations that work including whittling your own bracket to mount the alternator and swapping the voltage reference unit to convert the alternator to 6V.
But why? If you are staying 6V the generator will almost certainly do everything you need at less cost and look better doing it. Why is your friend wanting an alternator? |

Re: 1937 V-8 Alternator
I have an EJ Whitney conversion on my 34. They take the stock gennie and stuff an alternator inside. Looks correct, fan mount stays the same. They are not cheap, and take a month or so to get. 6 or 12 volt, pos or neg ground. Not a lot of amps, but better than stock.

The E. J. Whitney Company has been converting vintage automotive generators to alternators since 2004 with great success.

Re: 1937 V-8 Alternator
I converted my gen to 12V using a 56 case. Worked great. I was afraid of an alternator because they like to spin fast and the fans do not.

Re: 1937 V-8 Alternator
Why would it spin any faster on a flathead with the same size pulley?

Re: 1937 V-8 Alternator
It wouldn't spin any faster but it would work better spinning faster. The pulley I bought was a smaller diameter.

I have a converted 1934 Generator from EJ Whitney on my 32 cabriolet - has been on there for 7 years - works flawlessly.

Re: 1937 V-8 Alternator
I had 4 done by Whitney when I lived in CA back in the early 2000's and yes they worked great.Price and 40 amp output are some of the limitations. The OP was interested in Alt conversions
