Default Fan, Radiator, Shroud

Hey Guys,

For my 39 pickup am I looking for 1 inch for the fan blades from radiator, and 1 inch clearance between end of fan blades and shroud.

Sounds right to me, 1" Minimum clearance, but it can be more.

I agree, could be more away from the radiator. That's the beauty of using a shroud, fan does not need to be close to the radiator to do its job of pulling air through the radiator. I think what that diagram is telling you is: use spacers as necessary to have the fan half in / half out of the rear edge of the shroud. I believe that is the optimum fan location for evacuating air out of a shroud.

On the other hand, you don't want more than 1 inch around the perimeter of the fan, between the fan blade tips and the shroud. You have to buy fan and shroud sized to work together.

There is a lot of info on fans, shrouds and distances on the internet.

I like the looks of the WS-40 I think is the number. Just not positive yet my fan will go that high up on the radiator.

To quote Jay, that's the beauty of using a shroud. The fan can be positioned high or low, it will work the same, as the shroud/fan creates a vacuum, pulling air through the entire radiator, not just where the fan is located.

Attached you will see pictures of my 39 pickup shroud. At a fast idle and the outside temperature over 100 this engine ran for over 5 hours at an early ford V/8 meet in Va.
a number of years ago. Temp never got to 180 and came down 3 or 4 degrees when
I raced the engine a little. This is some larger Ford truck shroud installed upside down
with thin strips of 16 gauge steel on each side for mounting. I think it has 180 old
Robertshaw 360-180 stats that have larger flow openings that don't restrict the flow.
The fan is an industrial fan I found in Schramm compessor's attic. You should also
have a 3 lb pressure cap, clean radiator and the fan belt properly adjusted. G.M.
