Default Steering Boxes for 32's

Some where I read about certain Hudson steering boxes (Gemmer) being used to replace the stock boxes for better ratios etc. Can't find my info or where I read it. Any help out there? Thanks, John

I believe it is a '37 Hudson box - PM Mart on here to confirm, as he has one on his Roadster.

It sounds like you are looking for something specific but thought I would mention this anyway, Hot Rod John makes a steering box for '32-'34 Fords that uses a roller sector gear like a '37-'48 Ford steering box.

I have a big truck 32 box in the swap meet. It is 17 to 1(same as 37-48) and looks and fits like 32 box.

Yes, ,37 Hudson.
You have to modify the flange like the f1 / f100 swaps.
In my case the swap was a little more difficult because my car is RHD. You have a bit more room in a LHD car.
The 32 pitman arm fits the Hudson splines.

Barner NealinCA has also been working with these Hudson units.

Mart.

Here are a couple of links about John's EZ steer...

http://www.ezsteer.net/ezsteer-32-34

http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...light=ez+steer

I think he had a good idea...I just don't think it worked out...

I like the original Gemmer boxes...like the 37 Hudson. If you can find a good one...they can't be beat.

Stock 32 box on the left, 37 Hudson on the right...

Neal, Is it possible to put the Hudson in place of the 32 box? Or, switch stuff around between the 2 to do that?
Thanks
Jim

Jim - Here is a 37 Hudson box that has been converted for use in a 32 (stock 32 on the left, converted Hudson on the right)...

The only modification that needs to be done to a 32 is to enlarge the sector shaft hole in the frame, as the Hudson has a longer housing that has to go through the frame rail.

I didn't make the connection with EZ Steer and his name. He has got a lot of bad press on the HAMB but I don't have and personal experience with his unit.

Has anyone here had any good experiences with John Kovars EZ Steer? After reading all these negative posts here and on the HAMB I'm now sorry I even mentioned him on this thread but maybe it's a good thing to get the word out on a bad actor if that's what we have here. Another bad thing I apparently did at Hershey was recommend that a friend go and talk to him about one of these EZ Steer boxes for his '34 PU. I think he may have put one on order so I better contact him asap. Again, has anyone here had a recent positive experience with one of these '32-'34 EZ Steer boxes. I would really appreciate any feedback here on this post or by PM. Thanks!!

Yikes!! Another non positive story . Is there one ray of hope out there for anyone who has installed one of these EZ Steer boxes and is happy with it .
I called my friend who was planning to buy one of these EZ Steer boxes just as he was getting ready to
mail a check. He is in a holding pattern now while we determine the best alternate steering box for him to use in his '34 pu. I'm now thinking I should 'steer' him towards an F1/F100 box. Have no idea where we would ever find a '37 Hudson box but I do like the one that Neal put together.

JM, if your friend is planning on using the original chassis mounting position and column drop, he would possibly be better to use the '53-'56 F100 steering box. The F1 box has the worm 'under' the sector and would pivot the top of the column toward the screen - it is already tight between the wheel and screen and this gap may be reduced further. However, I believe the original pitman arm will fit on the F1 box, possibly with some adjustment to the indexing. Either way, the mounting flanges will probably need to be modified or replaced.

You can put any box from 1930 to 1934 box into a 32 frame . You will need the mounting flange of the 32 were because its at a different angle of the 33-34 and 30-31 but they interchange with each other. A 32 box is pretty much a 31,33 and box. Also looking for a quicker ratio change the gearing inside the box when you rebuild her or change the arm length too
.

Thanks for the info Rem. He probably wants to use the original chassis mounting but not the original column drop. '53-'56 F100 steering box sounds like a good option for him to pursue. I'm going to print this thread and the HAMB thread and send it to him. He doesn't do computers.

Here is a 54 F100 box machined to fit a 32 frame without welding or adapters. 1st shot shows original box next to the one reworked to fit my 32 frame. the rest show machined areas and taper of mount area.

37 Hudson boxes.... I'm pretty sure that rumbleseat (Paul) used one in his 34. Seems like it's been well covered, here, but might want to also check with Paul or the techno site for his notes.

As Neil said, Hudson boxs are hard to find. Be prepared to part with something in the range of 500 for a good one!
