Long-forgotten fact: What you guys are calling an "alternator" was in fact officially termed a "Delcotron generator"! This is the wording used in Chevrolet ads in 1963 and some time thereafter. So the OP is correct in using the term "generator"!

Generators and alternators both generate amps if they are working properly or turning fast enough .
